The United Nations Volunteers Program offers people from around the world the opportunity to participate in its volunteer programs, which last for 6 to 12 months.

When needed to perform a volunteer mission, the United Nations Volunteers program on the website looks for profiles that meet the mission's requirements, then contacts the corresponding candidates with specific details of the task, and they can confirm their interest and availability. A short list of available candidates shall be prepared for the selection process. Only when there are difficult tasks or missions that require high expertise in the field and several people to undertake them - such as post-natural or post-conflict tasks - then UNV will advertise them through the website, as well as through professional institutions and social media. But even in these cases, candidates must register on the site.

Voluntary work includes:

  • Volunteer abroad.
  • Volunteering in the participant's country.

Incentives and allowances

The purpose of the allowances is to enable international United Nations Volunteers to maintain a modest and secure standard of living at the duty station. The allowances shall not be considered as compensation, remuneration or pay for voluntary work.

The allowances offered are:

  1. Volunteer Allowance: Monthly expense to cover basic living expenses (this is not a salary).
  2. Travel expenses Travel to the duty station upon appointment and repatriation at the end of the mission.
  3. Accommodation Allowance: Costs calculated on the basis of the duration of the assignment, paid at the beginning of the appointment to volunteer.
  4. Insurance: life, health, and disability insurance.
  5. annual vacation.
  6. Change of place of residence: calculated on the basis of the duration of the task, paid upon completing the task successfully.

Many other United Nations Volunteers operate under normal conditions in capitals, with all modern amenities. The functions of the program are classified as "family" or "non-family" duty stations, depending on the nature of the mission and security in the region.
