The United Nations Volunteers Program offers people from around the world the opportunity to participate in its volunteer programs, which last for 6 to 12 months.
When needed to perform a volunteer mission, the United Nations Volunteers program on the website looks for profiles that meet the mission's requirements, then contacts the corresponding candidates with specific details of the task, and they can confirm their interest and availability. A short list of available candidates shall be prepared for the selection process. Only when there are difficult tasks or missions that require high expertise in the field and several people to undertake them - such as post-natural or post-conflict tasks - then UNV will advertise them through the website, as well as through professional institutions and social media. But even in these cases, candidates must register on the site.

Living conditions vary from stable environments to dynamic and changing environments. Volunteers must realize that many of UNV's work is in remote and isolated centers where basic amenities may be limited. Many other United Nations Volunteers operate under normal conditions in capitals, with all modern amenities. The functions of the program are classified as "family" or "non-family" duty stations, depending on the nature of the mission and security in the region.
