The University of Pittsburgh Press invites novelists around the world to participate in the 2016 Drue Heinz Literature Competition. The award is intended to encourage novelists, especially young people. It is open to writers who have published a series of fairy tales or at least three short stories or novels.

Eligibility criteria

  1. Authors who have published a novel or a collection of long fiction novels through an accredited publishing house, or at least three short stories or novels in journals or periodicals for national distribution, qualify for participation. Digital publishing and self-publishing are not counted.
  2. The prize is open to authors in English only, whether they are US citizens or not.
  3. University of Pittsburgh staff, former employees, current students and those who have been students during the past three years are not eligible to participate or to receive the award.
  4. Translations are not eligible if they are not translated by the original author himself.
  5. Qualified drafts include each unpublished draft of short stories. Two or more novels (the novel may contain 130 pages written with maximum double spaces); or a collection of one or more short stories and very short stories. Stories are accepted only as part of a larger collection, manuscripts may be less than 150 and no more than 300 pages. Pre-publication of works as a whole in any form (including electronic) makes them ineligible to participate in the Contest.
  6. Stories or novels previously published in magazines, literary journals or in books as part of selections deemed eligible.
  7. Works posted by other publishers may also be viewed. If you are offered to post them elsewhere and would like to accept the offer, please notify the University and the Contest Authority immediately. The work is also not eligible for the award.
  8. Authors may submit more than one work to competition that the content is not duplicate.
