EdX offers the opportunity for social workers around the world to attend a free course in community service and research from the University of Michigan. This course gives you the opportunity to learn the importance of an evidence-based approach while doing community business and how to conduct effective research.

Course Outline

  • Module 1: Why are we looking at social work? Introduction to course teachers and objectives. Why do we do research on social issues? Practitioners interviewed for evidence-based research and evidence.
  • Module 2: Organizing Social Work Research, Distinguishing Experimental Social Work Research from Non-Experimental Social Work Research, and Talking About Scientific Communication: Learn how the field of social work research is organized.
  • Module 3: Basic Concepts in Measuring Research: Validity vs. Reliability: The method of representation, size, generalization and types for each one. In addition to the concept of the effect of causal sizes versus the concept of correlation.
  • Module 4: Non-Experimental Methods - Quantitative Overview: What is Quantitative Research? The most common method: one group / through a specific time point.
  • Module 5: Experimental Methods - Quantitative Experimental Research (RCT) and Systematic Reviews.
  • Module 6: Overview of Qualitative and Mixed Methods: What is Qualitative Research? Ethnographs, narrative research interviews, focus groups, case studies, mixed methods, and grounded theory. In addition to the basic questions to be asked and the errors that should be avoided when evaluating any qualitative research.
  • Module 7: Locate the search, formulate a search strategy, search for articles online (outside academic databases) and evaluate the results.
  • Module 8: Integrating research into evidence-based practical decision-making, as well as interviewing practitioners for evidence-based research and evidence.
