Free Volunteering invites individuals and enthusiasts from around the world to apply for an opportunity to volunteer as a school assistant in Liberia. A variety of former volunteers were welcomed, who helped train teachers, educate children and make a lasting difference in student life. The division of volunteers depends on a range of skills, but schools operate from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 2:30 pm, and there is a great deal of flexibility to arrange a timetable that allows applicants to fully engage in school life and an opportunity to explore other aspects of life in Liberia.

Eligibility Criteria for Volunteer Opportunity:

Ideally, volunteers must be independent, self-motivated, love to work with children, culturally sensitive, eager to learn, active, and want positive change. Individuals, couples and families are welcomed, but all individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by another adult. Volunteers should contact the site team to discuss their skills and how they can best help, but they have the option to work in the following areas:

[1] Help regular classroom teachers

[2] Work in post-school programs (sports, art, singing, private lessons)

[3] Helping the school's vegetable garden

[4] General maintenance tasks (painting, grass cutting, basic trade, electrical repairs)

[5] Computer training with administrative staff

[6] Covering 32.5 hours per week (weekends are off)

What is covered by the opportunity:

[1] Free accommodation on the school campus is available with a private bedroom, shared bathroom, kitchen, and living facilities, all of which are clean, comfortable and safe with water and energy for 13 hours a day.

[2] Free lunch is available from the school cafeteria on weekdays, but volunteers are responsible for all other meals. There are also many local restaurants where meals can be bought at a relatively cheap price. A trip to large shops can be arranged with project staff, although private taxis and motorcycles are available

[3] Volunteers are responsible for their own trips and tickets but will be received at the airport by project staff who will lead them to the school premises

Benefits of Volunteering:

[1] It is expected to gain experience in teaching, training staff, transferring skills and agriculture by working with both young children and adolescents, building intercultural awareness and learning problem solving

[2] For younger volunteers (especially those under the age of 18), this is a great opportunity to build self-confidence, independence, and social awareness

[3] Get a chance to be part of the real Liberian community

[4] A short walk from beaches and lakes

[5] The opportunity to live close to dense rivers and trees with magnificent wildlife

[6] Within Liberia, many local goods and services are available
