The City of Benicarlo in collaboration with Onada Edicions, in order to encourage and promote reading through picture books for children, convenes the Sixth Children’s Picture Book International Prize Ciutat de Benicarló. To enhance the literary taste of the first readers, this competition targeting the Picture Books which are defined as those in which the story is told through images and text so that both complement each other in a coherent and harmonious way and aimed at children. The illustration must hold at least the same or more important than the text.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Authors of any nationality are eligible for the Children’s Picture Book International Prize Ciutat de Benicarló with any illustrated works; written in Valencian, Spanish or English and aimed at children. 
  • The work must not necessarily be finished and will be proportional to the format 210 mm x 210 mm closed. The length must not exceed 32 inner pages (excluding covers and endpapers). The illustrations may be a double page (16 illustrations maximum). 
  • The jury will consider both the literary part and illustration quality and the originality and appropriateness of the overall project.
  • Each author must own the rights of the text and the images to avoid claims of third parties. 
  • Participants must submit one or more projects with the following characteristics:
    • A document describing the project and, where appropriate, the specific techniques for the final edition of the work. 
    • A complete model of the album project, including text and illustration. 
    • A minimum of 3 examples of completely finished illustrations, where key scenes from the book are displayed. 
    • A proposal for endpapers. 
    • The written literary part shall not exceed 3,000 characters.

Award:

The prize will be 5000 €, the winning work will be published during the 2 months following the announcement of the verdict. To this end, the publisher will sign the publishing contracts. Winners authorize the City the rights of reproduction, public disclosure, and publication of the book, stating at all times the name of the author/s, for a period of 10 years.

Note: The award-winning author or authors are committed to delivering the finished work within one month after the announcement of the verdict. The awards ceremony and presentation of the winners will take place on November 16, 2019.

Submitting Works:

Delivering works must be as follows:

Envelope A: It contains the work in a USB memory. “Children’s Picture Book International Prize Ciutat de Benicarló“, the book’s title and author’s pseudonym is specified. As the sender has the pseudonym and address of the author. 

Envelope B: It’s submitted closed within the envelope A. The title of the work and the motto, the pseudonym, and a contact telephone number is specified in the front of the envelope. The inside should contain the complete name, postal address, contact telephone number, and email address as well as a photocopy of the identity card or passport and a brief bibliographic note.
