The University of Canterbury, in cooperation with The Robert Bell Travelling organization, is offering scholarships for students who have completed a qualification in Journalism and want to enhance their journalistic skills for a professional career life. The scholarship shall be known as The Robert Bell Travelling Scholarship. The current value of the scholarship is $12,000 per annum.

Eligibility Criteria and Conditions:

  1. The scholarship is established to enable persons elected to travel overseas to pursue inquiries and conduct research into news media and other like means of public communication. It is the desire of the donor that if practicable the scholar should be interested in matters likely to be of value and interest to the farming community of New Zealand.
  2. A candidate should, with the application for the scholarship, submit a program of the proposed travel, inquiries and research for the approval of the Academic Board.
  3. The scholar shall furnish such report, or arrange for the furnishing of such report on the work as may be required by the Academic Board.
  4. The emolument of the scholarship shall be paid at such times and by such installments as the Council shall determine.
  5. The scholarship may be terminated by the Council at any time on receipt of a report from the Academic Board that the conduct or progress of the scholar has been unsatisfactory.
  6. If in any year no award of a scholarship is made, the emoluments of that scholarship may either be added to the capital of the fund or be held in reserve to provide a further scholarship in a subsequent year, as the Council may determine.
  7. The scholarship may be awarded annually by the Council on the recommendation of the Academic Board to persons who have completed the requirements for a qualification in Journalism at the University of Canterbury and is tenable for one year.

What Will the Scholars Get?

The university will provide $12,000 for living and travel grant. The university has the right to terminate the provision of the scholarship, even during the school year in a case that the performance of scholars falls below a certain critical standard.
