The University of Canterbury is offering postgraduate students in Astronomy and Astrophysics (in either Master’s or PhD programs) to apply for the Frank and Doris Bateson Memorial Graduate Scholarship
Requirements:
- One scholarship will be available annually. It will be tenable for the time it takes a student to complete full-time or part-time study at postgraduate level (in either a MSc Part II program or a PhD program) in Astronomy or Astrophysics at the University of Canterbury.
- The scholarship will be awarded by the University Council, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences (or nominee). In recommending the award the Head of School will consider academic merit.
- Unless otherwise specified in the offer letter, an offer of a scholarship will lapse if it is not accepted, in writing, within one calendar month of the offer being made.
- The scholarship will not be co-tenable with a B. G. Wybourne Scholarship in Physics or Astronomy.
- If in any year there is no candidate of sufficient merit, no award will be made.
- The value of the scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient’s nominated New Zealand bank account as soon as practicable after an offer has been accepted and confirmation of enrollment in the relevant program has been received, or it will be credited directly to the recipient's tuition fees account, whichever the recipient prefers.
- Students not already enrolled in a relevant program should normally be enrolled by 31 March in the year following application. A recipient who is unable to enrol by this deadline must seek the permission of the Dean of Postgraduate Research (in the case of PhD students) or the Dean of Science (in the case of Master’s students) to take up the scholarship at a later date. Without such permission the award will be terminated.
- If it is necessary for their research, recipients, with the permission of the Dean of Postgraduate Research (in the case of PhD students) or the Dean of Science (in the case of Master’s students), may retain the scholarship while carrying out research for limited periods outside the University of Canterbury.
- A condition of acceptance is that recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance of the award, and that they will be willing to engage in UC community activities, such as student mentoring, acting as UC ambassadors, and being involved with UC publicity as appropriate.
- At the end of a recipient’s tenure the recipient must provide to the Scholarships Office a report for the Trustees on how the scholarship has helped him or her, and what he or she has accomplished during the period of tenure.
- In the event of a recipient’s withdrawal from the specified course of study for which the scholarship is awarded, the scholarship will be withdrawn, and any paid funds may be recovered.
- Continuation of the scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.
- A recipient of the award may apply for the award again.
Scholarship Amount:
The University will pay the successful applicant $2,000.
