The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology is offering research internships to a group of passionate undergraduate and graduate students who wish to conduct scientific research abroad as a part of their ongoing studies.

The Graduate University aims to train researchers who will play important roles in the international scientific community at leading scientific institutions in the public and private sectors. Accordingly, the program will make it a principle to recruit candidates with the potential and motivation to become leaders in scientific research on the international stage.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Those eligible to apply include students enrolled at graduate or undergraduate programs in universities, colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools in Japan or overseas.
  2. Academically applicants should be at least among the top 20% of students in their program.
  3. Applicants should be enrolled in a scientific program.
  4. proficiency in oral and written communication skills in English is a must.

Terms and Conditions:

  1. Applicants must obtain official approval to enroll in this internship from their perspective institutions.
  2. Applicants who intend to import biological or hazardous material for their research are urged to insure that such import is in compliance with all regulations of their home country, any country of transit, and of Japan, and to complete all necessary paperwork for importation well ahead of time.
  3. Applicants must enter all details and documents (as PDF files) in the application form at once  and it includes the following:
    • An updated CV while following the official format named OIST CV SHEET on the Official Page.
    • A statement letter while following the official format named STATEMENT LETTER on the Official Page.
    • A recommendation letterApplications from currently enrolled students must be supported by a recommendation letter from the Dean, Head of Department, or supervising professor of the program they are enrolled in.  Please consider that the request for a recommendation letter will not be sent until your application is submitted, so keep this in mind as you plan your application timeline.
    • ID Photo - a recent photo, showing  face from the front in standard passport orientation (image must be in JPG format, and less than 5 MB).
  4. The internship period is between 2 - 6 months.

Internship Benefits:

  • Successful applicants will receive a Living Allowance of 2,400 JPY per day(21.81 $) ,weekends & holidays excluded.
  • Successful applicants will receive accomodation and travel support during their stay at the university.
