University of British Columbia (UBC) is offering a scholarship in Canada to study full-time Doctor of philosophy in resources, environment, and sustainability, in The Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES). The minimum funding policy will help attract outstanding Ph.D. students to UBC, support them appropriately, and enhance UBC’s research enterprise and educational goals. The funding package will recognize the important contributions that Ph.D. students make to the University, and provide much-needed resources for the students to cope with living in the most expensive city in Canada.

In (IRES) our mission is to foster sustainable futures through integrated research and learning about the linkages among human and natural systems and to support decision making from local to global scales.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. There are no specific prerequisites for the RES Ph.D. program other than you must have completed a thesis-based Masters degree from a recognized institution. As we are an interdisciplinary program, we accept applications from all disciples and backgrounds. Anyone interested in studying environmental/sustainability problems in an interdisciplinary way is encouraged to apply.
  2. A GPA weighted A- average, 3.7 GPA, or 80% minimum. For International Students or institutions using a different grading system, First-Class Honours status or the equivalent must have been obtained.NOTE: Students with averages between 76-79% will still be considered, but will need an exceptional Thesis Proposal and exceptional Letters of Reference to be competitive.
  3. English requirements: TOEFL IBT overall score of 100. IELTS overall score of 7.0.

Funding:

  • All full-time students who begin a UBC-Vancouver Ph.D. program in September 2018 or later will be guaranteed a minimum funding package of $18,000 for each of the first four years of their Ph.D. This guaranteed minimum doctoral funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work (TA), Research assistant(RA), and Graduate Academic Assistant (GAA).
  • In many cases, Ph.D. students will receive more than the Minimum Funding Package (Ph.D. students at UBC-V currently receive an average of $30,000 per year). This funding can be used to pay for university-related expenses (e.g., tuition, books) as well as general living expenses.
Additional funding opportunities for Ph.D. applicants may come from UBC’s Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF): an $18,200 stipend plus full tuition coverage per year, for four consecutive years.
  • RES students have also been highly successful in receiving support from the most prestigious funding agencies. Many of our students are Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) or Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)  recipients, and in recent years we have seen our students receive both Vanier  Canada Graduate Scholarships and  Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship, the most highly-regarded scholarships in Canada.

Documentations:

A complete application includes the following items:

  1. One electronic (.PDF) file of each of your official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended or taken any courses at.
  2. We require three (3) letters of recommendation from academic sources. If one or more of your referees know you in a professional context, this is also acceptable as long as they are able to speak to your ability in your proposed research areas.
  3. English Proficiency Test.
  4. The RES program requires all applicants to submit a thesis proposal with their application.
  5. A sample of work done in the previous degree, or subsequently, in English. 15-page maximum.
