Japan Foundation invites you to its program of support leading scholars in Japanese studies by providing them with the opportunity to conduct their research in Japan to promote Japanese studies abroad. There are three categories in this program which are short-term and long-term participation for researchers and the third category, which lasts for 4-12 months for PhD candidates.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be accepted at this program:

Applicants must hold nationality or lawful permanent resident status in countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan.
Applicants must be in good health and proficient in either Japanese or English.
In principle, applicants must be able to stay continuously in Japan for the term of Fellowship.
Previous recipients of Japan Foundation Fellowships are eligible to reapply only if, on April 1, 2020, a full three years have elapsed since the termination of their most recent Fellowship.

Individuals meeting any of the following conditions are not eligible to apply:

Applicants in the fields of natural sciences, medicine, or engineering.
Undergraduates, Master’s degree candidates, those intending to enroll in undergraduate or Master’s courses at universities in Japan; or graduates who are to pursue Ph.D. courses in Japan.
Those who intend to use the Fellowship program for political or religious purposes.
Those who intend to develop and/or produce Japanese-language teaching materials.
Those who intend to acquire artistic training in the area of Japanese traditional culture like tea ceremony, flower arrangement, etc.
Those who plan to receive other grants concurrently with the Fellowship.
Those who have been in Japan continuously for more than a year dating back from April 1, 2020.

Monthly Benefits.

Monthly Stipend (covering living and research expenses): Scholars and Researchers will have 3724 USD while Doctoral Candidates will have 2886 USD.
Dependent Allowance: 465 USD.
Enrollment Fees: Actual amount, up to 465 USD.
