Zonta international foundation offers The Amelia Earhart Fellowship for Ph.D. females in aerospace-applied sciences or aerospace-applied engineering. This fellowship was established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, and it's awarded annually to up to 30 women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-applied sciences or aerospace-applied engineering.

Since the program’s inception, Zonta has awarded Fellowships totaling more than US$10.3 million, to 1,174 women representing 73 countries. And Zonta takes pride in its Fellows, who have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, professors, geologists, business owners, heads of companies, even Secretary of the US Air Force.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Women of any nationality, pursuing a Ph.D./doctoral degree.
  2. Demonstrate a superior academic record at a recognized university or college with accredited courses in aerospace-applied studies as verified by official transcripts and recommendations.
  3. It is imperative that students be registered in a full-time Ph.D./doctoral program and have completed at least one year of that program or have received a master’s degree in an aerospace-applied field at the time the application is submitted.
  4. Applicant must be registered in a full-time Ph.D./doctoral program by 15 November 2019 and must not graduate before April 2021.
  5. Classified members (club members and individuals with direct membership with Zonta International) and employees of Zonta International and Zonta International Foundation, and their family members (ancestors, descendants, adoptees, siblings, nieces or cousins, and those of their spouse or cohabiting partner), are not eligible to apply for the Fellowship.
  6. Please note that post-doctoral research programs are not eligible for the Fellowship.
  7. Note that previous Amelia Earhart Fellows are not eligible to apply to renew the Fellowship for a second year.

Funding:

The Fellowship of US$10,000 may be used for tuition, books, and fees, or living expenses (room, board or travel). For domestic and foreign recipients studying in the United States, Fellowship funds used for tuition, books, fees, supplies or required equipment for the program of study are not considered taxable income. Recipients are not permitted to defer the Fellowship and may accept additional grants and scholarships from other sources.

Required Documents:

  1. Plans for intended study.
  2. List and must include official detailed transcripts of grades or equivalent records from all universities, colleges, or institutions attended, including undergraduate institutions and degrees received. (Note: please do not upload electronic transcripts, or links to electronic copies, directly from the university as the documents may have expiration dates to review. Please scan official transcripts and/or save as a PDF and upload the saved copy in color. Please ensure all transcripts are legible.). All non-English documents must be translated into English to be considered.
  3. List scholarships, fellowships, and honors received if any.
  4. List previous publications, if any (must fit in the space provided; please do not attach publications).
  5. Employment history, if any.
  6. Essay on the academic program and professional goals - the applicant should describe, in general, scientific terms, a well-defined research program (thesis) and professional goals in 500 words or less. Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate a well-defined research program. Clearly demonstrate how the Ph.D./doctoral research program is directly related to aerospace engineering/space sciences
  7. Three recommendations from university professors (or supervisors). At least one of the referees must be able to describe the quality of the research program and the direct application of the research to aerospace engineering and space science.
  8. Current enrollment form or official statement from the university/college registrar. Verification of current enrollment must be submitted as a PDF. Acceptance letters are not verification of enrollment and will not be accepted.
