The Annual Conference on Governance, Intelligence and Security (GIS) invite researchers to participate in the 2020 session, which will be held under the title "Understanding Border Securitization in Contemporary Societies" from 28-30 May 2020 in Romania.

Border securitization remains a salient issue for many countries in the context of recent domestic and international political developments. Important waves of transnational migration, the management of post-conflict areas, problematic transitions to democracy, the spread of terror attacks, the emergence of unconventional threats have contributed to a broad debate about the direction and intensity of border securitization in contemporary societies. The meaning of border securitization changes over time, its causes are complex, its functions vary across settings and its consequences are often under-explored.

This conference aims to bring together works addressing any of these four elements of border securitization: the understanding, causes, functioning, and consequences. The event will gather a group of 30 researchers working on these topics in order to facilitate knowledge sharing and a better understanding of current events.

The organizers strive for a balance between established academics, early career scholars (Ph.D. candidates may also apply) and practitioners. We encourage theoretical, empirical or methodological papers on any aspects related to developments and approaches in the field of border securitization. Papers can cover any country or region of the world, there are no limitations in terms of geographical focus.

Papers can address any of the following topics including, but not limited to:

Migration and border securitization;
The role of international actors in shaping border securitization;
Territorial rivalries and geopolitical challenges;
The effects of border securitization on politics or economics;
Border securitization and national security;
Border management and international cooperation;
The impact of terrorism or unconventional threats on border securitization.

Conference Papers View:

Papers will be presented in the following format: 15 min. presentation + 15 min. discussion

In line with the goals of this conference, three types of papers are encouraged:

Theoretical papers that discuss the definition and conceptualization of new perspectives in border securitization. Such contributions should ideally bring a broad perspective of the concepts and relate them to existing analytical dimensions.
Methodological papers addressing specific issues or assessments related to border securitization. Contributions that bring innovative methods and data are particularly welcomed.
Empirical papers that seek to explain new developments, existing challenges, different forms of border securitization in diverse settings, drivers of border securitization, etc. Longitudinal analyses and comparative works are particularly encouraged. We have no preference for qualitative or quantitative techniques of analysis. However, we expect papers presenting single case studies to aim at building, testing, or modifying theories instead of being centered on individual instances.

Funding:

The organizers will provide accommodation and meals for the entire duration of the conference. In the case of co-authored works, the organizers will cover the costs for one author.
