In the framework of the fourth History Fest (2 June – 7 June 2020) is happening a doctoral workshop titled “Challenges of Pluralism: Politics, Society, Religion and Cultural Interactions in the South-East Europe by the end of the 20th Century”

In the workshop, the complexity of political and social reality in the South-East Europe, particularly in Yugoslavia during the 1980s will be presented. The focus will be on the following issues: What were the political and cultural relations in South-East Europe during the 1980s? To what extent did the countries in the South-East Europe build bridges of cooperation, and to what extent were there mutual confrontations? What was the status of ethnic minorities in individual states during the 1980s (e.g., relations between Bulgaria and Turkey, emigration of Turks from Bulgaria in the 1979s and 1980s; Albanians in Kosovo and relations between Yugoslavia and Albania in the 1980s, etc.?) The South-East Europe and world cultural forums – to what extent did Balkan countries use international forums to present their culture and history? What was the attitude of Soviet Union vis à vis those endeavours? What were the economic crises experienced by the Southeast European states in 1980s and what was the role of IMF? What is the balance sheet of the communist era in the economic development of the South-East Europe? How strong was the opposition in the socialist countries of the South-East Europe and how did it look like in individual countries?

The doctoral workshop is open to international young researchers, especially for doctoral students who are writing dissertation on the period of the end of socialism in Europe and transition from socialism to post-socialist societies. Applicants should have a keen thematic interest in the history of the end of socialism in Europe and Yugoslavia. Sessions will be held in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and English. Participants are expected to give a presentation on a topic related to their doctoral thesis and to take part in discussions about other doctoral theses. They are invited to participate in the other events during History Fest.

Organizers will cover the cost of the accommodation (five nights) as well as meals. The participants are expected to organise the trip to Sarajevo and the organization is able to help cover the costs. In the application applicants should notice if they need support for the travel costs. Participants are expected to arrive to Sarajevo by the evening of Tuesday, 2 June and leave on 7 June 2020.
