The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a non-profit organization that supports independent global journalism, is seeking proposals that develop innovative approaches to reporting on the novel coronavirus crisis using collaboration among journalists and newsrooms across state lines or national borders. The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting encourages proposals that:
Journalists from all over the world are eligible to apply. The Pulitzer Center is open to proposals from groups of freelance journalists working together and groups of newsrooms collaborating on a project. People from many backgrounds and perspectives are empowered to report on the coronavirus crisis. Journalists from various social, racial, ethnic, underrepresented groups and economic backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
Journalists/team members who are in the employ of newsrooms or are being paid by a publisher shouldn’t be included in your proposal budget, but costs of contractors (data researchers or data visualization/story designers) can be included within the budget proposal.
There will be no budget range for funding these projects, but most awards for their international reporting/travel program are between $5,000 and $10,000 but it can be more or less depending on circumstances. News organizations are expected to pay freelance journalists for their work, though in exceptional cases, The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting may consider stipends to cover a reporter’s time if provided in the budget with an explanation.
