The School of Physics at the University of Melbourne is seeking a Research Fellow in Experimental Atomic Physics, particularly with experience in the area of laser-atom interactions such as laser cooling, Bose-Einstein condensation, trapped ion quantum computing, or quantum optics. The university is looking for a highly motivated researcher who can pursue a dynamic research program involving experimental physics in close collaboration with existing postdoctoral researchers and research students.
Situated at The University of Melbourne Parkville campus, the appointee will report to and work within the laboratory of Prof Robert Scholten.
Key Responsibilities:
Research and research training:
You are expected to significantly contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop your research expertise with an increasing degree of autonomy.
- Contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne.
- Undertake administrative functions and obligations primarily connected with the research, including maintenance of a professional laboratory environment.
- Give internal team presentations, external seminars and conference presentations as required.
- Develop effective timelines and milestones based on goals of the research program.
- Develop expertise in research with an increasing degree of autonomy and work with limited supervision and/or as part of a team.
Teaching and Learning:
- Contribute to and assist in the co-supervision, mentoring and training of postgraduate or research higher degree students in the appointee’s area of expertise.
Leadership and Service:
- Actively contribute to the research culture of the School of Physics and of the research group by attendance and active participation in meetings and seminars associated with the research work of the project, as well as School meetings and seminars.
- Effective demonstration and promotion of University values including diversity and inclusion and high standards of ethics and integrity.
- Actively contribute to School activities such as Open day to promote student engagement.

- Undertake administration primarily relating to the activities of the role.
- Perform other tasks as requested by the supervisor or the Head of School.
- Actively participate in the University Professional Development Framework.
- Ensure an up-to-date record of University compliance courses, such as, but not limited to, Appropriate Workplace Behaviour, PDF for Staff and Supervisors, OH&S training courses.
- Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) responsibilities.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
- A PhD (or close to completion of a PhD) in a relevant area of atomic, molecular and optical physics, with tunable laser experience.
- A demonstrated aptitude for research, with a sound publication record in relevant areas, commensurate with experience and opportunities.
- Excellent interpersonal and both written and oral communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated excellent organisational skills to meet deadlines and bring projects to a timely completion.
- Excellent processing and analysis of experimental image data skills.
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT AT LEVEL B AND DESIRABLE FOR LEVEL A:
- Ability to supervise and mentor research students.
- Ability to take leadership of a substantial research project.
- A national or international research profile, as evidenced by publication record, active collaborations, invitations to speak and/or service to relevant professional bodies.
Desirable:
- Demonstrated achievement in research supervision.
- High level of computer literacy and experience.
- Experience with laboratory data acquisition hardware; in particular, the ability to create control interfaces with Python and Labview.
