Public Poetry has launched a new poetry contest under the theme of "Virus Poems". Public Poetry is making this contest FREE. All of its activities are focused on creating new opportunities for poets and poetry, and this is one way they can do that now.  While we hunker down in the face of the pandemic, we can also  be productive,  allowing ourselves to reflect and clean out some of the cobwebs that cling to us,  - all good stuff for writing poetry inspired by these times we’re in now.

Contest rules:

  1. Anyone can submit, including outside the USA.
  2. Only new, original poems accepted.
  3. ONE entry per person non-members;  up to TWO entries for all Public Poetry Members (membership information
    HERE).
  4. 40 lines maximum per poem (title, epigraph and blank lines do not count.)
  5. Must be written in English.
  6. The contest is judged blind; your name and other identifying information CAN NOT appear anywhere in the submission itself.
  7. YOUTH poems will be judged in 3 categories: 7 and under;  8 - 12 years old; 13-18 years old.
  8. All submissions should include the date you wrote the poem at the top right above the title.
  9. Submissions may not be modified in any way after entry.
  10. Failure to comply with any contest guidelines may result in your submission being disqualified.

About Public Poetry:

Public Poetry showcases the enduring power of poetry. We pay poets for their work and initiate collaborative partnerships that enrich the cultural economy, delivering poetry to audiences in Houston and beyond.

Public Poetry’s collaborative programs and projects put hundreds of poets in front of thousands of people at libraries, colleges, theaters, museums, music venues, and more.

Ongoing programs include:

  • Amonthly library reading series with a signature mix of established local published poets, academics, performance poets, and kids reading together
  • A monthly “Favorite Poem” open mic
  • Houston’s first international poetry film festival; a nation-wide poetry contest with a $1000 prize
  • The Poetry Ride, a coach trip to the Round Top Poetry Festival with a workshop on the journey by Houston’s Poet Laureate.
