The Department of Educational Studies is offering 2 PhD bursaries to prospective students to start in the academic year 2021/2022. The Department has an established MPhil/PhD programme in Education, and an MPhil/PhD in Art Practice and Learning programme. Together these programmes provide opportunities for study in a wide range of topics relating to the field of education. Research proposals are encouraged in any of the areas in which the Department has expertise, subject to supervisor availability (see https://www.gold.ac.uk/educational-studies/staff/).

Successful candidates in the past have worked in such areas as:

  • art practice and learning
  • bilingualism in education
  • children’s literature and education
  • curriculum policy and practice
  • digital technologies and learning
  • social justice and education
  • race, politics and education
  • education policy
  • comparative education
  • educational research ethics as situated practice

Bursaries cover 75% of part- or full-time enrolment fees at the home rate and are payable for up to a maximum of 3 years of full-time study and 6 years part-time study (subject to satisfactory progress). International students are eligible to apply for bursaries but will be expected to pay the difference between home and international fee rates themselves.

Goldsmiths participates in two prestigious Doctoral Training Partnerships.

Fully-funded ESRC studentships are available via the South-East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), a consortium formed of 10 leading UK Universities, all of which are engaged in cutting-edge social science research and training. Fully-funded AHRC studentships are available via the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South East England (CHASE) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), a consortium of 9 leading UK institutions offering additional professional development opportunities including the enhancement of media skills and placements overseas or with arts organisations. How to apply

Applicants should have excellent qualifications at both Undergraduate and Masters’ levels in Education or a closely related area of Art and the Social Sciences. All prospective students need first to apply to the Department for a place on the MPhil/PhD in Education or the MPhil/PhD in Art Practice and Learning by 23.59 on January 11th 2021. Once applied, candidates should send a copy of the application form, research proposal and a cover letter to: marcus.aitken@gold.ac.uk . Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview on January 20th 2021.
