The Center for Law & Economics (www.lawecon.ethz.ch ) at ETH Zurich has approximately 60 group members from law, economics, political science and computer science. At the Center, Professor Stefan Bechtold invites applications for Ph.D. positions in law (intellectual property, antitrust, privacy, Internet law, LegalTech, with a focus on law & economics methods).

Job description

We are looking for highly qualified, research-oriented students with a legal education and an interest in one or several of the areas of law listed above. Are you interested in writing a Ph.D. thesis (paper-based, in English), participating in the international law & economics discourse, and delving into empirical and/or experimental methods? At our Center, students can conduct internationally oriented fundamental research as part of a highly motivated team at a leading research university. We offer an interdisciplinary environment, close supervision, and excellent contacts with leading scholars at U.S. universities. Our Center organizes various seminar series and conferences which enable our group members to meet internationally leading researchers from all areas of law & economics on a regular basis. Our broad international network offers attractive career prospects.

Our Ph.D. students work on an interdisciplinary project for about three years. We offer comprehensive training in social science methods in the first year. This may include courses in economics, political science, and/or statistics at ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, the Study Center Gerzensee, or at international summer courses. Second-year students will take specialized courses tailored to their individual Ph.D. projects. We offer our Ph.D. students ideal working conditions, an internationally competitive salary (paid according to ETH standards ), as well as limited organizational or teaching duties, ensuring that they can focus almost entirely on their own research. We provide support for attending international conferences and workshops, and for research stays abroad. Our offices are located in downtown Zurich, and the working language is English. The starting date is flexible.

Your profile

Applicants to this position must have a law degree (master, J.D., State Exam etc.) with excellent grades and, ideally, should have already had some exposure to formal social science methods (quantitative empirical or experimental methods).
