The EPSRC Aura Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Offshore Wind Energy and the Environment invites high-quality applications for 4-year taught and research PhD scholarships. Up to 20 funded positions are available to join Cohort 3 starting September 2021, including two Industry sponsored scholarships with the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.

We’re looking for the world’s brightest minds to join us in developing cutting edge research and solutions to the environmental and engineering challenges facing the offshore wind industry.

Join a growing industry

Globally, the world is turning to renewable energy sources to reduce our carbon footprint. The UK is committed to the use of offshore wind energy to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Aura CDT enables delivery of this target by developing environmental and engineering solutions to key offshore wind sector challenges, supporting a sustainable future for us all.

Supportive research environment

The Aura CDT is led by the Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull with partner universities Durham, Newcastle and Sheffield. It integrates the core strengths of each institution in environment, engineering and energy and also works closely with over 20 international industry partners, including the ORE Catapult.

You will initially study for a PG-Diploma as part of a cohort in Hull, the heart of the UK’s Energy Estuary, and global centre for sector research, innovation and development. This combines taught skills and experiential learning to bring you up to date with developments in the offshore wind industry and prepare you for your PhD research. In subsequent years, you will be based at one of the partner universities of Hull, Durham, Newcastle or Sheffield and get real sector experience with the industry partners mapped to your chosen area of research.

All students will have both an academic supervisor and an industry link, giving access to world-leading research and development facilities in both environments, while recipients of our Industry Partner scholarships will work closely with ORE Catapult throughout their research. You will be further supported by a peer mentor and a Continuing Professional Development Programme, which continues through your time at the CDT.

Impactful research with strong industry links

Your research could make a real impact to the exciting challenges in the offshore wind industry. We are seeking high quality, innovative people whose backgrounds, experience and identity broadens and enhances the diversity of our existing team.

Our extensive, long-term collaboration between academic and industry partners ensures your training addresses the challenges facing the offshore wind industry. As well as our Industry Partner Scholarships , our Six Research Themes were developed through industry consultation to cover challenges from engineering to environmental.

Entry requirements

If you have received either, a first class honours degree, or a 2:1 honours degree and a Masters (or the international equivalents) in any of the following, or associated subjects, we would like to hear from you. For overseas students we also require an IELTS score of 7.0 with no element below 6.0.

  • Biology/Chemistry/Computer Science
  • Earth Science/Engineering/Geography
  • Mathematics/Physics/Psychology

The partners are committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; applications are welcome from students from diverse backgrounds (part-time study available for UK students due to Tier 4 rules).

Core Scholarships for all partner institutions are available for UK candidates who satisfy the residency rules of the EPSRC. A number of Core Scholarships are available at the University of Hull for Overseas applicants. The Industry Partner Scholarships are based at the University of Hull and are open to Home/Overseas applicants.

For an informal discussion regarding the application process or research at the Aura CDT, please contact auracdt@hull.ac.uk or call +44(0)1482 463331.
