Context:

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is currently considered to be one of the most relevant solutions for the production of carbon-free electrical energy, both for transport and for stationary applications. The distribution and management of fluids within the cell, i.e. reactive gases and reaction products (water), has a major impact on its performance and durability. The general goal of the FURTHER-FC project, funded by the European Union, is to obtain new insights on the performance limitations related to the distribution of O2 within the cathode, by comparison of different structures and electrode compositions and through the use of innovative ex and in situ analysis methods. At the end, this approach will make it possible to propose new electrode concepts with improved performance.

Main mission:

The main objective of the post-doctoral work will be to carry out coupled measurements of operando Raman microspectroscopy and microthermography through the thickness of the membrane and at the membrane-electrode interface in order to make the link between the local concentration of water, temperature distribution and O2 transport kinetics at catalytic sites.

Working environment:

The candidate will be hosted at the Institut Européen des Membranes (IEM - UMR5635; http://www.iemm.univ-montp2.fr ) on the site of the University of Montpellier, at the “Ionic and Electrochemical” team of the “Interface, Physicochemistry and Polymers” department (IP2). The team's field of activity ranges from the synthesis and characterization of solid materials for the electrochemical production of energy and for advanced water treatment processes, to the development of innovative spectroscopic techniques for the study of ion transport mechanisms governing the electrochemical behavior of electrochemical cell and batteries.
