The Institute and the recruiting department

A pioneer in ocean science, IFREMER’s cutting-edge research is grounded in sustainable development and open science. Our vision is to advance science, expertise and innovation to:

- Protect and restore the ocean

- Sustainably use marine resources to benefit society

- Create and share ocean data, information & knowledge.

With more than 1,500 personnel spread along the French coastline in more than 20 sites, the Institute explores the 3 great oceans: the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A leader in ocean science, IFREMER is managing the French Oceanographic Fleet and its dedicated scientists create ground-breaking technology to push the boundaries of ocean exploration and knowledge, from the abyss to the atmosphere-ocean interface.

Well-established in the international scientific community, our scientists, engineers and technicians are committed to advance knowledge about our planet’s last unexplored frontiers. They provide the science we need for informed decision-making and public policy and they transfer this knowledge and technology to businesses to fulfill public and private needs. Core to our mission is also to strengthen public awareness about the importance of understanding the ocean and its resources, and empowering future generations of leaders through education and outreach national campaigns.

Founded in 1984, IFREMER is a French public organization and its budget approximates 240 million euros. It is operating under the joint authority of the French Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the French Ministry for the Ecological and Solidary Transition, and the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

General areas of responsibility

The research unit Ecology and models applied to fishery resources (EMH) seeks to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of fisheries and the functioning of ecosystems. It relies on models (such as ISIS-Fish) developed in the unit to describe these dynamics and project their evolution under variable environmental, economic and regulatory conditions. These models are used within research projects or management instances to support decision making in fisheries management.

The stocks of anchovy and sardine in the Bay of Biscay show high levels of abundance but present warning signals in terms of fish condition (length and weight). These fish are too small which generates problems of commercialisation for the fleets and of transformation for the canning industry. The project DEFIPEL works towards the improvement of the knowledge on the compartments of the ecosystem and their interactions (environment, resources, fleets and the transformation sector). This knowledge is the basis for an integrated understanding of the functioning of the small pelagic industry in the Bay of Biscay to support and for the support of management decisions. DEFIPEL is a multidisciplinary project (ecology, fisheries science and economy) with a strong partnership with the industry (fisher organisations, national and local representatives, canning manufacturers). Le post-doctoral fellow will integrate the knowledge produced by the project into fisheries models and develop management tools.

General areas of responsibility

This job has three main goals: First, integrating the knowledge produced by the project in a model of the Bay of Biscay fishery dynamics; then building scenarios together with the actors of the sector to investigate opportunities of adaptation to the fluctuating context of the pelagic system; finally evaluating these scenarios with regard to ecological and economic objectives in order to build a menu of trajectories of evolution in support to decision making.
