Job description        

Full-time academic position in Development Sociology. The post involves participating in all the teaching (including the supervision of master and PhD students), research and administrative tasks of the Department of Social Sciences and Labor Sciences of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences. Candidates must have an expertise in Development Sociology as attested by publications in scientific journals. Candidates will be able to teach both in English and in French.

The successful candidate will have to contribute to the scientific and academic renown of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and will be invited to apply for a grant from the European Research Council (ERC) and for any source of outside funding (FNRS, Europe, Regional funds, etc…) enabling him/her to develop his/her research.  The ULB Research Department will assist with applications.

Area of Research: Development studies

Educational and scientific goals:

This chair in sociology of development comprises four courses.

Three of these courses are already in the program, namely:

[a] "Introduction générale à l'étude des pays en développement", course given at BA level to second year students in Sociology and anthropology, Humanities and social sciences, third year students in Political science, general orientation , as well as to MA students in Educational sciences. This course is taught in French.

[b] "Development and Globalization: Theories and Practices" given at MA level to first year students in Population and development studies and in other masters. This course will be taught in English. It will critically present the main theories of development, whether dominant or not, the practices they have inspired in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of development policies, programs and projects, as well as their main identified effects. It will also present a sociological analysis of current debates in the field of sustainable development, for example on climate change, biodiversity, gender, participation, the fight against poverty.

[c] "Stage et rapport de stage" in the master in Population and development studies.

Candidates will be invited to formulate an original course proposal in the field of Development sociology to complete their teaching load from the academic year 2023/24. This course proposal should be consistent with the teaching programs of the Department of Social Sciences and Labor Sciences.

Regarding the research included in the load, the candidate will have to carry out research relating to Development sociology within one of the research units of the Institute of Sociology, and will promote doctoral and postdoctoral research within this perspective.

PhD Degree (with doctoral thesis) in Social Sciences, or in Development Studies.
