Speciation is usually a continuous process towards increasing divergence and reproductive isolation between two lineages. Reproductive isolation can be obtained due to various mechanisms called hybridization barriers. A special case of hybridization barriers is based in the endosperm of the developing seed. Such endosperm-based hybridization barriers have been shown to be conserved across distinct species groups suggesting that the phenomenon represents a major mechanism of reproductive isolation in plants, albeit largely ignored in modern literature of speciation.

This is the main motivation for the research group that the PhD Research Fellow will be part of. In addition to the main supervisors, Anne Brysting  and Paul Grini , the group consists of several postdocs, PhD students and master students. The group is part of an international project team, which includes molecular-, developmental- and evolutionary biologists, representing a diverse array of expertise ranging from phenotypic developmental analysis and the epigenetics of genomic imprinting to molecular systematics and speciation theory.
