Description

The scholarship was established in 2011 and is maintained by an annual gift from Newcrest Operations Limited. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and support meritorious students in the final three years of study in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in the following discipline areas: 

For 2021:
Chemical Engineering / Extended Major; Chemical and Biological Engineering Dual Major; Chemical and Environmental Engineering Dual Major; Chemical and Materials Engineering Dual Major; Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Dual Major; Civil Engineering / Extended Major; Civil and Environmental Engineering Dual Major; Civil and Geotechnical Engineering Dual Major; Electrical Engineering / Extended Major;  Electrical and Computer Engineering Dual Major; Mechanical Engineering / Extended Major; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dual Major; Mechanical and Materials Engineering Dual Major; Mechatronic Engineering Extended Major; Mining Engineering / Extended Major; Mining and Geotechnical Engineering Dual Major; Software Engineering / Extended Major. 

Or in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Master of Engineering in the following discipline areas: 

Chemical Engineering Field of Study; Chemical and Biological Engineering Field of Study; Chemical and Environmental Engineering Field of Study; Chemical and Materials Engineering Field of Study; Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Field of Study; Civil Engineering Field of Study; Civil and Fire Safety Engineering Field of Study; Electrical Engineering Field of Study; Electrical and Computer Engineering Field of Study; Mechanical Engineering Field of Study; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Field of Study; Mechanical and Materials Engineering Field of Study; Mechatronic Engineering Field of Study; Software Engineering Field of Study.

Eligibility

An applicant is eligible for the Scholarship, if the applicant:

(a) submits an application to the Associate Dean by the closing date for applications; and
(b) is a domestic student in accordance with The University’s Fees Policy; and
(c) is enrolled full-time in an Approved Program in a Relevant Field; and
(d) has, at the time of application, completed at least 12 units, but not more than 27 units towards an Approved Program; and
(e) has achieved a GPA of at least 5 in all UQ courses credited towards an Approved Program; and
(f) does not hold another scholarship that the Associate Dean considers to be similar.

Selection criteria

(1) For the selection process, the Associate Dean must establish a selection committee, comprising -

(a) the Associate Dean, or nominee, as chair of the committee; and
(b) one representative of Newcrest; and
(c) academic staff members who are currently teaching in a Relevant Field,
     with University staff comprising the majority.  

(2) The Scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing greatest merit as demonstrated by -

(a)  academic achievement in courses undertaken to date ; and
(b)  strength of interest that the applicant demonstrates in pursuing a career  in the mining industry; and
(c)  strong health, safety and environment mindset; and
(d)  strong work ethic; and
(e)  high level of team skills; and
(f) demonstrates conduct which aligns to Newcrest's values and behaviours; and   
(g) any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the applicant's future success in the engineering profession.

(3)      The selection committee may decide to interview short-listed applicants.

(4)     In a year where there is an eligible applicant enrolled in a discipline of mining engineering, preference for one Scholarship will be given to an applicant who is enrolled in the discipline of mining engineering.

Scholarship value : $10,000 per year, for up to 3 years

Number awarded : In consultation with the donor, the Associate Dean (Academic), will determine the number of scholarships awarded in any year
