Project description: 2D materials are highly attractive for nanoelectronics due to their ultimate thickness dimension and unique physical properties. They can greatly benefit emerging spintronic device concepts, enabling better strategies to manipulate spin within spin logic switches, spin valves, or spin transistors.

The experimental project focuses on proximity interactions in van der Waals heterostructures of 2D materials, which arise due to spin-orbit coupling and/or magnetic exchange effects. The heterostructures shall comprise ultrathin layers of graphene, transition metal-dichalcogenides, or topological insulators. We expect novel, intriguing opto-spintronic and magneto-electronic properties of the heterostructures, and aim to control them via charge tuning, layer number, specific material interfaces, and the crystallographic alignment of the layers.

The set of complementary experimental techniques used to investigate the interfacial spin texture includes spin-resolved electrical transport measurements, as well as (ultrafast) photocurrent and Kerr microscopy. Data interpretation can be done in close collaboration with theory groups.

Keywords: Nanotechnology, spintronics, graphene, quantum transport, vdW heterostructures, 2D materials, quantum materials

Your profile: We are seeking an enthusiastic person, who completes and advances our group. Successful applicants should hold a Master in Physics or Materials Science with honours, be highly self-motivated and team-oriented. Strong communication skills are expected. Fluent written and spoken communication in English is essential. Programming skills on Python will be advantageous.

Application: Applications will be accepted from immediately until the position is filled. Please send a short cover letter and CV directly to
