The scholarship was established in 2021 to encourage a student wishing to pursue an Honours degree and is tied to the following research project.
Impacts of land use on health: understanding landscape nexus with public health
Land use around us is changing via climate change, urbanisation and reduction in wild spaces. These changes have been occurring over the last few decades and are potentially influencing disease patterns in our communities.
The types of disease we will expect to see in our populations in the future will vary according to the physical landscape that these populations inhabit. This will be true for both chronic and infectious diseases. For chronic disease exposure to greenspace and coast appears to have positive effects in reduction of prevalence of chronic diseases linked to inflammatory pathways, especially in those in lower status socioeconomic groups. At the same time increased interaction between humans and wild spaces may increase the risk of zoonotic disease outbreaks (via interaction with mammals such as bats).
This project will examine how a changed landscape may alter the mix of diseases that could be expected in the future. South East Queensland is experiencing a rapid population growth phase and accompanied land use change. The period 2001-2020 saw the in SE Queensland’s population increase by 766,000. Understanding population-based human diseases on counts of observed cases at different residential areas with relevant characteristics such as age distribution, socioeconomic status, and level of environmental exposure are essential to provide better patient care and support.
First this program will identify where chronic disease occurs and its relationship to landscape and socioeconomic status of the population residing in those areas. A range of geospatial-linked human health data such as the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children can be used. Once some of these relationships are established, we will examine how health in populations change with long term trends using spatial longitudinal epidemiological methods. This will include disease trends in areas undergoing rapid land use change.
An applicant is eligible for the Scholarship if the applicant –
(a) Submits an application to the Head by the closing date for applications; and
(b) is enrolled full-time in the Approved Program.

(b) past work and volunteer experience; and
(c) strength of publications.
Your application must include a personal statement detailing your interest in environmental epidemiology, the specific research project and your potential for success, as well as, a current résumé and list of publications.
The Scholarship is awarded to the applicant/s showing greatest merit as demonstrated by –
(a) academic achievement and potential for scholastic success;
(b) past work and volunteer experience; and
(c) strength of publications.
