Ramon Magsaysay, born 1907 in the Philippine Islands, is best known for serving as the 7th President of the Philippines from 1953-1957.

Earlier, however, he started as an automobile mechanic, a Captain in the US Army Forces in the Far East / Philippine Commonwealth Army during WWII, a Philippine Congressman, and the Secretary of National Defense. Known as a leader of great humility and dignity for all people, he employed creative solutions that garnered American support, gained trust with his countrymen, and brought an end to the Hukbalahap Rebellion (1942-1954).

According to a study by the Pew Research Center, an average of only 10% of Filipino-Americans complete a postgraduate degree compared to 24% of general Asian descent and 13% of all U.S. citizens. The Earl Pascua Filipino-American Heritage Scholarship will help encourage and support Filipino-Americans to continue pursuing citizenship and excellence through a postgraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics program.

Filipino-American graduate students are eligible to apply if they are pursuing a STEM degree and plan to pay it forward to other Filipino-American brothers or sisters in the future. To apply, write about how Ramon Magsaysay’s strategies can be implemented in today’s society to create positive change for Filipino-Americans.
