Lumen was founded in 2011 by Carla Rapoport, a director of Lumen Projects Ltd, a UK-based non-for-profit company, registered in Wales, United Kingdom. Since the first show in London's Cork Street in January 2013, Lumen has awarded more than $50,000 in prize money and staged over 35 exhibitions and events around the world, including New York City, Shanghai, Athens, Amsterdam, Riga, Cardiff, Hong Kong, Leeds and London. In collaboration with its partners, Lumen advances the understanding of digital art at seminars, artist talks, workshops and symposiums.
Much more than a competition, Lumen is dedicated to building a movement around digital art, providing a network and opportunities to its longlisted and shortlisted artists, as well as the winners. "Lumen is where technology & art, research & practice; thinking & creation all come together. It is definitely much more than just a showcase" says 2015 People’s Choice Award Winner Fabiano Mixo.
Lumen is honoured to be working with a range of education and art partners including the UK's Computer Arts Society, Waltham Forest Digital Month, Beijing Today Art Museum, The Current Museum, Meural, New York's School of Visual Arts, Brighton Digital Festival, CYLAND Media Art Labs of St Petersburg; V&A Digital Futures, Eureka Museum, Halifax, British Computer Society Chartered Institute for IT, Blackdove and the Andrew Lamont Gallery, Brecon, Wales.
Now in its sixth year, The Lumen Prize celebrates the very best art created digitally by artists globally. Its goal is to focus the world’s attention on this exciting genre through an annual competition and a global tour of works selected by an international panel of judges.
Once an artist is selected for the Longlist they become part of the Lumen family and become eligible for a range of opportunities going forward including exhibitions, commissions, sales and opportunities to speak about their practice. For example, artists who qualified in 2014 have had their work collected by major institutions and Lumen continue to develop relationships to promote their artists and create further opportunities for them.
The 2018 Lumen Prize will open for entries in 15th March 2018. All art is eligible as long as it engages with technology in some form. If you have any questions regarding whether your work suits The Lumen Prize please email jack@lumenprize.com.
There is an administration fee of US$47.50 to enter. This covers 2 entries and each additional entry costs US$23.75. All entry fees go directly towards the prizes and global tour.
Artists can use any equipment, there is no limit. Traditional work can be part of the creative process, but Lumen does not accept digitized versions of traditional work.
The timeline may change.
All works are reviewed by our International Selectors' Committee, made up of art and technology specialists, including curators, writers and academics. This group selects the Lumen Longlist which opens for a public vote for the People's Choice Award. The Longlist then goes before our Jury Panel, who select the exhibition and award winners.
