At The New York Academy of Medicine, we are dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of people living in cities. We do this through our Institute for Urban Health, home of interdisciplinary research, evaluation, policy, and program initiatives; our world class historical library of medicine and public health and its active programming in history, the humanities, and the arts; and our Fellows a network of more than 2,000 experts elected by their peers from across the professions affecting health.

We approach our current priorities of healthy aging, disease prevention, and eliminating health disparities—all critical issues of our time—with a deep and long-standing commitment to understanding the complex factors that determine health in cities.

Since our founding in 1847, the Academy has a legacy of over 160 years of pioneering progress in urban health—making a lasting impact on health in New York City and beyond.

As more than half of the world’s population lives in cities and rapid urbanization is a truly global phenomenon, the time is right for the Academy to continue this important work.
