Flexibility: Situations can change quickly in the field, and job descriptions must change accordingly. Team composition and working environments may also change during missions. Flexibility and adaptability are critical in successfully completing tasks in an MSF project.

Managing Others (Acting as Teacher and Trainer): The willingness and ability to train others is a core expectation of MSF workers. Building the capacity of staff is an important goal in any MSF project.

Cross-Culture: Working in an unfamiliar culture inevitably involves challenges in communication and perceptions. You may be in a country where people have a very different understanding of issues like punctuality at work, responsible behavior, or respect for personal space. Being aware that people may not act or think like you, accepting this, being tolerant and able to adapt your own behaviors if required is of the utmost importance when working in the field.

Stress Management: The environment of an MSF project is often chaotic and volatile and the people we are trying to help may have seemed overwhelming needs. Even in more stable areas, heavy workloads and high pressure to respond may be stressful. Field workers must be able to cope with being away from home and family for an extended period of time or are provided mental health services by MSF.

It is an international humanitarian medical non-governmental organization (NGO) of French origin best known for its projects in conflict zones and in countries affected by endemic diseases. In 2015, over 30,000 personnel -mostly local doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, logistical experts, water and sanitation engineers, and administrators- provided medical aid in over 70 countries. Most staff are volunteers. Private donors provide about 90% of the organization's funding, while corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately US$1.63 billion. Doctors Without Borders was founded in 1971, in the aftermath of the Biafra secession, by a small group of French doctors and journalists who sought to expand access to medical care across national boundaries and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation.
