The Nature of Cities aspires to green cities around the globe, and very interested in imagining cities in which nature and people co-exist, cities in which the relationships between the human-made and the natural are imagined differently. In this context, it created an annual English Flash Fiction Prize, and the theme of this year’s stories is "City in a Wild Garden".

Eligibility:

  1. Authors of any nationality or country of residence are welcome.
  2. Must be at least 16 years old as of 1 January 2020.

Conditions for Stories:

  1. Be 750 words or less, not including the title.
  2. It could be of any style or genre of fiction (realism, surrealism, sci-fi, magical realism, dystopic to utopic).
  3. It can be about anything: climate change; food security; utopias; wild nature; a love story, there are no limitations on the plot or action of the story. But plot elements must include cities, nature, and people.
  4. Set in the present or future (near or far) and inspired by the phrase “City in a wild garden”, and authors do not have to literally use this phrase in their stories, as they may interpret liberally any of the words in the phrase.
  5. Be set in a city (the notion of “city” may be liberally interpreted as any location).
  6. Be submitted in English.
  7. Should be an original work by the submitter, to which he/she holds the rights.
  8. Be previously unpublished, not under consideration in other contests, and remain so during the duration of the contest.
  9. No racist, sexist, homophobic, gratuitously violent, or otherwise offensive content is accepted.
  10. Individual authors (under actual name or pseudonym) may submit no more than one work.

Prizes:

6 money-winning stories:

  1. One 1st place story receives $2,000.
  2. Two 2nd place stories receive $1,000 each.
  3. Three third prize stories receive $500 each. 
  4. A larger number of stories will be included in a book to be published (in late 2020 or early 2021) by Publication Studios.

About the Nature of Cities:

The Nature of Cities is three legally independent sister organizations, all non-profit charities, including The Nature of Cities, The Nature of Cities-France, and The Nature of Cities-Europe. TNOC’s believes the route to cities that are better for both people and nature is through transdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. Its missions are to curate joined conversations about urbanism across ways of knowing and modes of action. It creates transdisciplinary, publicly available, and widely disseminated programs, events, and knowledge for green city-making.
