Internship Opportunity at UN Office in Geneva in Social Media

United Nations is offering an internship opportunity at its office in Geneva in the field of social media. Selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Press Officer in charge of social media. The work will focus on researching and preparing written and multimedia content for the flagship @UNGeneva accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Duration and Working Hours:

Three to six months depending on the needs of the service., on a full-time basis with five working days per week (40 hours).

The internship is unpaid.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Journalism, communications, digital media, or marketing; students of international relations or related fields may also be considered.
    Must be enrolled in a master’s degree program or apply within one year of graduation.
  2. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the program.
  3. Fluency in English and a working knowledge of French are required. Knowledge of other official UN languages, German, and/or Italian, is a plus.
  4. Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.
  5. Broad technical knowledge of audio-visual media, including new and emerging technologies; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office.


  1. Monitor various sources for new content and information about what is happening in and around the UN on a given week;
  2. Edit and subtitle news videos for UN Geneva social media channels, using dedicated software (Adobe Premiere Pro); create visuals, quote cards, and other materials as requested using online tools (such as Canva or Adobe Photoshop);
  3. Attend press conferences and events at UN Geneva to gather quotes and take photos and videos which can be used in social media posts;
  4. Draft posts for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as requested;
  5. Research trends and interesting posts from partners and suggest retweets/regrams; monitor the social media accounts for followers’ comments and questions, and flag them to the Press Officer as needed;
  6. Take an active role in the live coverage of events;
  7. Draft monthly statistics reports reflecting the performance of the @UNGeneva social media accounts;
  8. Attend biweekly press briefings with other UNIS interns; prepare at least one summary of the briefing and receive feedback;
  9. Attend at least two full-day meetings of human rights treaty bodies or the Human Rights Council; prepare at least one press releases and receive feedback;
  10. Contribute to the daily media monitoring of Swiss newspapers (in French, German, Italian, and English), with other UNIS interns;
  11. Carry out other tasks as requested by the United Nations Information Service.

Required Documents:

Completed online application (Cover Note and Personal History Profile) is required, as the Cover Note must include:

  1. Title of degree application is currently pursuing.
  2. Graduation Date (When will the applicant be graduating/graduated from the program?).
  3. IT skills and programs that the applicant is proficient in.
  4. Top three areas of interest.
  5. Explanation of why the application is the best candidate for this specific internship, and their interest in the United Nations Internship Program.
  6. Scanned copies of the applicant's valid passport and medical insurance coverage.
  7. Online Personal History Profile must include all past work experiences, IT skills, and three references.
