The United Nations offers an internship opportunity in the Office of Human Resources in the United States. The OHR internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension to no longer than six months, depending on the needs of the department. The intern will work with colleagues from diverse backgrounds within the diverse and inclusive workplace for 35 hours over five days a week, full time.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Responsibilities of the Intern in the Human Resources Department:

  • Assists with planning and organization of conferences and other outreach activities.
  • Participates in planning and implementing special events organized by the Outreach unit (information sessions, career development forums, university visits, etc.) as necessary.
  • Provides logistic support for the organization of public events, guided tours, and briefings.
  • Conducts internet research on thematic issues.
  • Coordinates with special guests and VIPs.
  • Oversees RSVP lists and volunteers.
  • Maintains databases.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of surveys.
  • Provides general office support (processing, drafting and finalizing correspondence and other communications; setting up and maintaining files/records, organizing meetings, etc.).
  • Takes on other special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities of the Intern in the Public Information/Communications Department:

  • Drafts and schedules content for the UN Careers social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, etc.
  • Identifies, researches, drafts and edits content (text, photos, documents, and multimedia) for online publication (website and social media).
  • Manages engagement with the UN Careers audience on Facebook; monitors and reports risks to the supervisor.
  • Accompanies Outreach unit team members and supervisors to meetings.
  • Assists with live coverage at global events that take place in New York (Facebook Live, etc.).
  • Assists with data visualization through graphs and maps.
  • Assists with drafting reports based on quantitative research and analysis.
  • Takes on other special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities of the Intern in the Graphic Design Department:

  • Design layout for the UN Careers social media channels.
  • Helps to develop a creative strategy.
  • Creates graphically engaging presentations and materials.
  • Presents visual concepts and ideas in a compelling and attractive manner.
  • Participates in organizing and setting up for special events organized by the Talent Outreach unit (information sessions, career development forums, university visits, etc.) as necessary.
  • Assists with data visualization through graphs and maps.
  • Designs posters for outreach activities.
  • Edits images and videos for outreach activities.
  • Takes on other special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities of the Intern in the Video Production Department:

  • Coordinates video production and distribution of stories.
  • Produces and edits video stories about human resources and management.
  • Proposes TV/video stories about staff members and management.
  • Produces and arranges video interviews with UN officials, specialists, etc.; selecting sound bites and visual elements.
  • Researches write and edit scripts, storyboards, and story synopses.
  • Edits images and videos for in-reach and outreach activities
  • Takes on other special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities of the Intern in the Data Analysis Department:

  • Assists in designing, planning and carrying out data collection for multiple projects (evaluation of the talent outreach program and the social media content, applications review, diversity in the UN…).
  • Assists in liaison with different UN Departments, agencies or member states.
  • Carries out statistical analyses with the most common packages (SPSS, STATA, R), using a variety of methods to analyze a wide array of variables.
  • Prepares statistical overview reports based on the results of the analyses.
  • Takes on other special projects as assigned.

On completion of the internship, the successful candidate will have gained:

  • An excellent understanding of the UN Secretariat, its structure and its ongoing human resources management reform.
  • Valuable experience in human resources.
  • Knowledge of the challenges of human resources management in a multicultural environment and in an inter-governmental organization.
  • An understanding of staff selection processes, especially recruitment and outreach strategies.
  • Drafting and writing skills for public information and communications in an international context.
  • Extensive exposure to managers and staff members of the UN Secretariat and the UN System.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in journalism, communications, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, human resources or related field.
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
    • If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in journalism, communications, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, human resources or related field.
  • Be computer literate in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment scanner, printer, etc.).
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Excellent command of the English language. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
