International Potato Center CIP in Peru is looking for a consultant to prepare a training course on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. The Training will include information on CGIAR level, CIP and donor (i.e. Dfid, USAID) policies and requirements on safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults; this will include main concepts, examples, expectations of the roles of country management, project staff and implementing partners, instruments they could apply, Q & A’s, Quiz.

It is expected that the training (number of sessions to be determined in accordance with the need) will be participatory and suitable for a varied group of adult learners. As such, it expected that sessions will:

  1. Be based on principles of adult and participatory learning.
  2. Include sufficient opportunities for participants to engage with the materials and concepts being presented such that all sessions will involve a significant proportion of the time with participants engaged inactivity.
  3. Include powerpoint presentations if necessary but that these should be limited in time and length so that the balance of a session is more in favor of activity rather than presentation.
  4. Reflect respect for an individual’s beliefs and culture and will lead to an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

CIP envisions this first training will take place in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya. The training must take into consideration the cultural diversity and language considerations of each country. The training should be designed to facilitate adaptation to other similar contexts.

Eligibility:

  1. Experience working on child protection or safeguarding, and vulnerable adults in development and research organizations.
  2. Experience of community programming and work in partnership with local organizations to affect change
  3. Experience in supporting the strengthening of staff and partners’ capacities on safeguarding and developing training courses and activities.
  4. Excellent grasp of current best practices in terms of safeguarding.Knowledge and experience with DFID safeguarding requirements a plus.
  5. Understanding of safeguarding in the context of conducting research and research-related activities in programs (assessments, etc.).
  6. Ability to write succinct, high-quality training materials in excellent English and/or local language to a tight deadline.

Responsibilities:

  1. The consultant will gather information on CIP programs, projects, working models and analyze the adequacy and effectiveness of openly available training courses to determine an adequate training platform for CIP.
  2. The consultant will ensure that the training course is customized and aligns with external and internal policies and requirements and is developed considering CIP’s model and context of working. The consultant will engage CIP parties involved in the operationalization of the Safeguarding policies and project activities in the applicable countries to duly consult their views. These include:
  3. Internal: Director of People and Organizational Development, General Counsel, Head Project Management Unit; Global Security and Risk Manager, Country Manager, Program Leader(s), Principal Investigator (s).
  4. Externally; CGIAR system and Donors as applicable.

This can be done through (i) desk review of documentation and (ii) interviews through phone calls and Skype.
