Fellowship Opportunity for Journalists in Climate and Environment from the Metcalf Institute in the United States

The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute is accepting applications for its 22nd annual science immersion workshop for journalists from June 7 to 12, 2020. Ten journalists will be accepted at this fellowship which includes tuition, room, board, and travel support. The Metcalf institute workshop provides journalists with hands-on experience and expertise from leading scientists, policymakers, and communicators who are working to project the impacts of climate change, identify adaptation measures, and investigate the most effective ways to communicate these challenges. Workshop topics are carefully selected to offer widespread relevance through local, regional, and national (U.S.) examples. It’s a unique and intense week of learning in the field, classroom and lecture hall for journalists who rarely get the time for in-depth study.

If you are accepted at this Fellowship, You will:

  • Receive a comprehensive overview of climate change science.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of how scientists conduct research and address scientific uncertainty.
  • Develop the skills and confidence to translate the language of scientific journals for news audiences.
  • Build confidence in your abilities to discern the credibility of scientific sources.
  • Board a research vessel to study the impacts of rising water temperatures on ecosystems and fish populations.
  • Visit wetlands, shorelines, and coastal communities to better understand adaptive management efforts and solutions in response to warming temperatures.
  • Discover new ways to report on climate change that build audience understanding and engagement.
  • Cultivate new sources by interacting with leading researchers and policy experts in an informal, off-deadline atmosphere.
  • Network and develop lasting relationships with journalists from around the globe

Eligibility:

  1. You must be a full-time professional journalist who works in any media.
  2. Applicants should have a demonstrated desire to improve their understanding of science and sharpen their environmental and investigative reporting skills.
  3. This fellowship is geared to early- and mid-career journalists looking to start or expand coverage of the environment and who can demonstrate a need for training in topics relating to water resources and global change in coastal environments.
  4. Applicants do not need a science background; rather, the program is designed to bolster the fellow’s understanding of science to improve science-based reporting.

Funding:

  • Metcalf institute supports ten fellowships each year. Two of these fellowships are available to journalists based outside of the United States.
  • A Metcalf institute fellowship award includes room, board, and tuition, as well as up to US$500 in travel support for U.S. based journalists and US$1000 for journalists based outside of the U.S., paid only as a reimbursement after the program.
  • Non-U.S. citizens applying from outside the U.S. will be asked for written assurance that they have full travel funds and can obtain the appropriate visa.
