Research Postdoctoral Fellowships in Public Health in Ireland from Wellcome 2020

Wellcome is offering postdoctoral researchers in Public Health at academic organizations who aim to become independent scientists the opportunity to apply for the Research Career Development Fellowships for 2020. 

Eligibility criteria:

  1. You can apply for a Research Career Development Fellowship if you’re already driving your own research and you’re ready to lead an independent research program.
  2. You must have a PhD and significant postdoctoral research experience.
  3. You should have made important contributions to your area of research, eg publications, patents, software development or an impact on policy.
  4. You must have sponsorship from a head of department or equivalent at an eligible host organization in the Republic of Ireland.
  5. If you're proposing to stay in your current department, you should describe in your application how this proposal will further your independent scientific career.
  6. If you've been away from research (e.g. for a career break, maternity leave, or long-term sick leave), Wellcome will allow for this when it considers your application.
  7. You can only submit two full applications to this scheme. 

Selection criteria:

  1. Your research contributions.
  2. The scientific merit of your proposed project.
  3. The significance of the research.
  4. The feasibility of your proposal.
  5. The suitability of your sponsor and host environment for both your research and for the development of your independent career.

At the end of this fellowship, you should:

  1. Have achieved international standing in your area of research.
  2. Be leading your own research program.
  3. Have the skills and experience to apply for senior level fellowships or permanent positions at research organizations.

Who can't apply if:

  1. You have held or you currently hold a nationally competitive fellowship at the same career stage as this fellowship.
  2. You hold an established post, although Wellcome is willing to consider a preliminary application if you have a strong justification for moving to a different organization
  3. You are currently applying for another Wellcome fellowship.
  4. You want to combine research with a continuing clinical career in medicine, psychology, dentistry or veterinary practice. Instead, see Wellcome’s clinical fellowship schemes.

What's expected of your host organization:

  1. Support to lead your own independent research.
  2. Space and resources you'll need from the start date through to the end date of your award.
  3. The status and benefits of other academic staff of similar seniority.


  1. A basic salary (determined by your host organization) for up to 5 years.
  2. A fellowship supplement of £7,500 for your personal support.
  3. Personal removal expenses.
  4. Research expenses, normally including one research post.
  5. You can also apply for Research Enrichment funding.
