The One World Media is offering a Competition to journalists and filmmakers all over the world. Established in 1988, the One World Media Awards recognise the best media coverage of developing countries, reflecting the social, political and cultural life of people around the globe and Celebrating underreported stories that break down stereotypes, change the narrative and connect people from different cultures

Eligibility:

  1. All entries should focus on stories, topics or issues in, about or related to the developing world, including Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East, Russia or the Post-Soviet States.
  2. Jurors will be looking for media that covers underreported stories or new angles and approaches to more familiar stories.
  3. Entries must have had their first screening, broadcast, theatrical release, launch or publication between 14 February 2019 and 13 February 2020.
  4. The entry has been broadcast, screened or published (in print or in an established online publication/website) in the UK
  5. The entry has been broadcast or published (in an established print/online publication/website) internationally and is available for an English-speaking audience
  6. The entry has been screened at an international film festival

Selection Criteria:

Entries will be evaluated based on the overall merit of the piece, with an emphasis on:

  • Relevance 
  • Quality 
  • Originality and creativity
  • Substance and accuracy 
  • Impact and reach

Category Criteria:

  • Children in Conflict Reporting Award: For a piece of media, including broadcast, online, print or film, that portrays issues related to children in conflict zones by telling compelling stories that generate empathy and understanding.
  • Digital Media Award: For websites, online features, apps, documentaries and other digital technologies that use creative and innovative techniques and content to extend knowledge and understanding of the developing world.
  • Environmental Impact Award: For a piece of media, including broadcast, online, or film, that explores the relationship between people and the planet in these areas: climate change, energy, environment, food, water, wildlife.
  • Feature Documentary Award: For a feature-length (over 40 minutes) documentary film that deals with stories, topics or issues in, about or related to the developing world.
  • International Journalist of the Year Award: For a filmmaker or journalist who has made the most outstanding contribution to international journalism during the past year.
  • News Award: For a single television or online video news report that deals with stories, topics or issues related to the developing world.
  • New Voice Award: For a young filmmaker or journalist working in any medium, 32 years of age or under as of 13th February 2020, who has made a contribution to international journalism during the year.
  • Popular Features: For a piece of media, including broadcast, print or film, that deals with stories, topics or issues related to the developing world through the creative treatment of an issue. 
  • Print Award: For an article (750 words or longer) published or online that deals with stories, topics related to the developing world. such as sport, music, food, and health.
  • Radio & Audio Awards: For audio, podcast, on radio or online, that deals with stories, topics or issues related to the developing world.
  • Refugee Reporting Award: For a media, including broadcast, online, print or film, that covers refugee issues by telling compelling stories that generate empathy
  • Short Film Award: For a short film that deals with stories, topics related to the developing world. The short film must be between 5 and 40 minutes.
  • Special Award: For an independent media organization based in a developing country using media to address social, political and economic issues. 
  • Student Award: For a piece of media, including film, radio made by a student as part of a journalism or filmmaking course at a university.
  • Television Documentary Award: For a factual journalistic program broadcast on television or online.
