Internship in the Field of Public Policy from Mercy Corps Foundation in America

Mercy Corps offers an internship opportunity to applicants who pursue a master’s degree in international relations, public policy or related field in Washington DC from May to August 2020 under the supervision of the policy advisor.

Project Description:

The mercy corps policy and advocacy team serve as the main interface between mercy corps and external partners on issues of policy.  The team seeks to advance mercy corps’ values and interests by promoting policies that support the mission. It works to inform and shape policy.

Eligibility:

  1. The policy and advocacy are seeking an intern to support the breadth of the team’s portfolio. The intern may have the opportunity to specialize in one or more areas, through engagement in all areas that will be expected. 
  2. All interns should have the following core qualifications: 
  • Pursuing a master’s degree in international relations, public policy or related field.
  • Interest in humanitarian and development issues and policy and advocacy.
  • Background in Middle East policy.
  • Demonstrated solid writing, editing, and researching skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Solid computer skills, You must be able to work effectively and accurately with MS Word, Excel, Google applications, and email.
  • Flexible work attitude, You should be able to work productively in a team environment and independently.

Your Responsibilities: 

  • You will support and participate in the work of the policy and advocacy team, with a primary focus on the Middle East. Areas of focus may include:
  1. Response to humanitarian crises in Syria, Iraq, Palestine (West Bank/Gaza) and Yemen.
  2. Support the team’s strategic analysis and advance agency priorities on the Middle East with congress and the administration.
  3. Improving a robust and principled humanitarian response to the various crises in the Middle East.
  4. Defending foreign aid budgets in an era of fiscal austerity
  5. Understanding the linkage between international policy, programming, and outcomes in the humanitarian and development field, with a focus on the Middle East.
  6. Understanding the core elements of the US policy process, including the roles of Congress, USAID, State, and the White House in development policy-making.
  7. Knowledge of key qualitative and quantitative resources related to US development policy.
  8. Understanding specific policy issues, as listed above, or according to the interests of the intern.

You will support the PA team through the following activities:

  1. Conduct policy and practice research in support of mercy corps advocacy initiatives.
  2. Assist in drafting advocacy documents such as reports, briefing notes, talking points, ‘Dear Colleague’ letters, or factsheets on relevant policy issues.
  3. Attend meetings and hearings of interest to mercy corps and report back on key issues.
  4. Assist in organizing meetings with congressional offices, administration officials, and other contacts, and in maintaining a database of key interactions.
  5. Review external and internal reports and publications and summarize relevant findings.
  6. Assist in communicating policy and advocacy updates to the broader mercy corps community through mercy corps’ intranet system, weekly newsletter, and website.

  • You will remain responsible for all costs associated with:
  1. Travel to/from the mercy corps office.
  2. Lodging in Washington DC.
  3. Living expenses.
  4. Laptop computer.
  5. All other costs associated with this internship
