European Solidarity Corps (ESC) is offering a Volunteer opportunity and is looking for volunteers who are interested in migration issues & willing to interact with asylum seekers (especially with women & children). The organization is not looking for any type of special skills, the motivation being the most important criteria for the selection of the volunteers. The best qualities of a volunteer for this type of project are flexibility, open-mindedness, empathy, team spirit, interpersonal skills, ready to take initiatives & good capacity to adapt. Volunteers should be ready to live in an isolated place & to face residents who suffer from the post-traumatic stress disorder.

Project Description:

This project consists of hosting vulnerable female asylum seekers, single or with children in 21 apartments. The team assists the residents in the legal, social and medical field. The goal is to give the women a maximum of autonomy starting from their own capacity in order to be ready to leave the Logis and start an independent life. Volunteers will be working together with the team to provide individual support and carry out activities for residents.

Their main role will be to guide, inform and motivate families regarding activities and appointments. They will also:

  • Help with the organization of the daycare (0 to 3 years old babies)
  • Co-lead & to co-organize activities for children (creative & artistic workshops, sports activities,...)
  • Co-organize workshops with families in order to improve communication & community harmony (cooking workshop or any other activities)
  • Offer individual support to new families (ex: how to read a map, how to take public transportation,...)

Funding:

The two volunteers will share a flat within the Logis de Louvranges, it means the volunteers will live in their workplace. They will share a kitchen/living room area as well as a bathroom but each of them will have their own bedroom. They will get a travel card allowing them to access the closest cities (Ottiginies, Louvain-la-Neuve, Wavre) & Brussels, located at about 30km from Louvranges. A volunteer will receive a monthly allowance (about 300€) for food & pocket money (120€). Keep in mind that the Logis de Louvranges are located in an ISOLATED area, there are few buses passing by.

Training During the Project:

Volunteers will receive a pre-departure training by their sending organization before the activity. Volunteers will then participate in 2 ESC seminars organized by the National Agency (on-arrival and mid-term-meetings) and an on-arrival training organized by the Coordinating Organisation while in Belgium. Additionally, training related to asylum policy & psychosocial aspects will be proposed to volunteers according to opportunities. Possibility to attend French lessons if needed.

The European Solidarity Corps:
