The United Nations Volunteers Program is looking for online volunteers to work in the field of Data Science for Development and Humanitarian Assistance.

Main Tasks:

The online volunteer will participate in the developing machine learning research, apply natural language processing techniques to build, maintain and improve on analytics and organize large datasets to gain actionable insights. The tasks may include:

  • data processing;
  • data cleaning;
  • transforming data into machine readable format;
  • converting unstructured data (such as documents) into structured records, applying ML tools such as classification or clustering to obtain insights;
  • information extracting from large datasets;
  • using anomaly detection methods to identify unusual patterns in structured data;
  • analytics reporting; writing software to generate maps, charts and other types of output.

SDG AI Lab will support the volunteer as needed at least with a weekly check-in via Skype. The Volunteer will send the deliverables via email. The Volunteer will work under the coordination of the Technical Specialist at Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (IICPSD).

Background and Objectives:

IICPSD’s SDG Artificial Intelligence Lab initiative requires assistance in developing and applying algorithms to support the research and digital solution development. The assignment involves exploring how to deploy big data and machine learning approaches on development issues; and particularly analyzing and learning from text-based sources of data using natural language processing algorithms and tools. The Lab provides in house expertise and research support to various UNDP projects to mainstream data science solutions to development problems and to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Electrical engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computational Finance, Economics or related field;
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques such as text mining, sentiment analysis, image processing, predictive analysis, event detection, and modeling of complex systems;
  • Data visualization skills;
  • Working knowledge of various programming languages for analytics, such as Python;
  • Familiarity working with quantitative and qualitative data.

About the UN Volunteers:

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both societies at large and the individual volunteer.
