QueryLetter.com is offering a writing contest on a very unique theme, as this writing contest is all about book blurbs. The twist? It wants blurbs about completely made-up, nonexistent books. Get creative!

Let your imagination go wild—and who knows? You may be inspired to turn your blurb into a novel of your own one day.

Mission:

Write and submit a back cover blurb of 100 words or fewer that sets the stage for a novel, establishes the characters, and raises the stakes in a way that makes readers want to find out more.

Contest conditions:

  1. Your blurb must be original. Any submissions found to contain plagiarism will be disqualified.
  2. Submissions must be 100 words or fewer. Please run a spellcheck and proofread carefully.
  3. You may submit multiple entries provided each entry is a completely unique blurb.
  4. You can apply from anywhere in the world. No purchase is necessary to enter this contest.
  5. In applying, you grant us permission to publish your blurb entry on the
    QueryLetter.com blog.
  6. Submissions only accepted in English.
  7. Please apply by noon (US Eastern time) on September 15, 2020.

The award:

  • QueryLetter.com will award one prize of $500 to the best blurb.
  • The submitted blurbs will be judged by website team of query letter writers based on how effectively they hook readers, taking into account the writing style and the overall impression.

About QueryLetter.com

The team at QueryLetter.com is made up of publishing industry professionals dedicated to helping authors achieve their goals. Some of us have worked at literary agencies, others at publishing houses, and some are published fiction or nonfiction authors, so we know the ins and outs of the query process and can identify exactly what agents and publishers are looking for. We also understand how difficult it can be to take a step back from your manuscript and see it the way an agent or publisher would, so when authors trust us to do so, we never take that lightly.
