The Department of Culture in Sharjah is offering the opportunity to writers, critics, and those interested in Arab Poetry to participate in the Sharjah Award  for Criticism of Arab Poetry that was designed to sponsor and support Arab critics and those interested in studies and experience of Arab poetry. The award focuses on the field of literary criticism at Arab poetry and opening up research prospects for Arab critics to serve the Arab creativity.

Competition Rules:

  1. The research should be prepared for publication and has not previously been published or printed on paper or electronically, or won a similar award, and at the same time does not submit to another award or competition, and that it is an original work dedicated to the award. 
  2. The researcher should not participate in more than one research.
  3. The research must adheres to the scientific standards and that it meets its requirements, while clarifying the margins, sources and references in the research.
  4. The number of search words submitted for the award should be between (20,000) and (25,000) words, lined up on pages (A4), and each page should contain approximately 250 words.
  5. The administration will not commit to returning the submitted researches.
  6. In the event that the conditions and controls of the award are violated, the prize will be giver to the winner
  7. The winners are announced and prizes distributed during the Sharjah Festival of Arabic Poetry.
  8. The Department of Culture in Sharjah is responsible for printing the winning works and reserves the rights for the first edition of these works.
  9. Any work inconsistent with the conditions or incomplete attachments will not be accepted.
  10. The prize winner is not allowed to apply for participation again after three years.
  11. The winner is not allowed to add any changes to the winning research after the results are announced.

Required Documents:

  1. Scientific and literary CV (in Arabic) indicating postal address, telephone numbers and e-mail.
  2. Fill out the form stating that the research will not be published or won in any other award, and that the research will be published in accordance with the criteria of the Sharjah Culture Department.
  3. Fill out the prize participation form.
  4. A copy of passport and two personal photos.
  5. A CD containing the research stored in the word system, in addition to three original copies printed on papers, (A4), taking into consideration not to write the participant’s name or refer to it on the printed and submitted work.

Prizes:

  • First Place: AED 100,000
  • 2nd Runner Up: AED 75,000
  • 3rd Runner Up: AED 50,000

About Department of Culture Sharjah:

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi issued an Emiri Decree No. (20) on April 30, 1981, for establishing the "Cultural Department," which later became known as Department of Culture and Information after initiating the artistic work efforts and expanding the base of it to the citizens throughout the country. The Department assured the aim by creating an identity of Arabic and authentic Islamic culture, influenced by the culture of humanity in a larger sense, following Sheikh Sultan's slogan, "Enough with the concrete revolution, and turn to create a Human being."
