Film Free Way invites professional and amateur filmmakers to participate in the annual Namur Festival that has been taking place in Belgium since 1995 on nature and wildlife. Every year, the festival brings together more than 35,000 spectators and visitors from all backgrounds.

Festival Goals:

  • To raise the awareness of authorities in charge at all levels to the protection of wildlife and the environment;
  • To raise the large public’s awareness of the knowledge of nature and wildlife’s respect;
  • To boost the production of films dedicated to Nature and Environment through the granting of awards in competition and showing those films on the big screen to a very large audience;
  • To show films in the best possible technical conditions: in 385-seat cinemas, screens of 20x8m, laser projector, and 5.1. sound;
  • To favor contacts among professionals (filmmakers and distributors);
  • To publicize and distribute limited-budget productions;
  • To offer forums for discussion between filmmakers and the audience during the Festival.

Awards:

Professional Films Competition: (Submission time over)

  • Award for best film.
  • Award for the best picture.
  • Award for best screenplay.
  • Award for best animal behavior.
  • Award for the best environmental film.
  • Award for the best short film (less than 26min).
  • Audience Award.

Amateurs Films Competition: (Application is open until 15 August 2020)

  • Award for best film.
  • Award for the best picture.
  • Award for best screenplay.
  • Award for best educational quality.
  • Award "Francis Staff".
  • Audience Award.

Ultra-short Films Competition (less than 1 minute): (Application is open until 15 August 2020)

  • Award for best "ultra-short" film.
  • Audience Award.

Rules & Terms:

For the amateur’s category:

  • The competition is open to all non-professionals of image, sound, and editing: individuals, associations, clubs, classes.
  • A filmmaker is considered non-professional when his/her income from filmmaking is lower than 50% of his/her total income.
  • The admitted films are professional films dedicated to the discovery, observation, protection, and conservation of wild nature.
  • All topics related to nature can be exploited. Here are some examples of themes that have been highlighted in the last 25 years of the Festival:
  • The wild fauna and flora of all countries.
  • Special and rare behaviors of animals from different countries.
  • The natural environment of all countries and their management.
  • Interactions between plant and animal species.
  • Fauna and flora as managed by humans (fish farming, forest management, agriculture, revalidation centers, hunting, zoos…).
  • Human activities in wildlife and/or the threat these activities represent for wildlife (human-wildlife cohabitation, water purification, and use, transhumance, gardens, oceans, forests, quarries, hedges, brownfield sites, wildlife discovery-oriented activities…).
  • Environment change.
  • Animal welfare.

For Ultra-short Films category:

  • The admitted films are professional or amateur films dedicated to the discovery, observation, protection, and conservation of wild nature. All themes related to wildlife can be exploited.
  • The theme can be treated in a humorous or poetic way, as a long shot, as a documentary, a commercial, an animated cartoon, a fiction, etc. 

Selection:

All films will be viewed by a selection committee, composed of image professionals and scientists, and this committee will select the films admitted to participating in the competition.

Will are excluded from the selection:

  • Incomplete films or films of which the artistic and/or technical quality is considered insufficient
  • Films that do not correspond to the criteria of admission.

The participants in the competition will be informed personally about their selection. In that case, it is absolutely imperative to communicate the following information:

  • An original master digital file in Full HD (1920x1080).
  • 3 photos of the film minimum and 1 photo of the filmmaker minimum.
  • The synopsis (For the amateur’s category).

For the amateur’s category:

The non-French speaking films will be dubbed in French or shown with French subtitles. The translation costs fee will be supported by the organizers. The following elements should accompany the original master digital file of the non-French speaking films:

  • The international mixing audio track(s) (including all sounds except the comments and the dialogues) in stereo.
  • The complete script with the time code corresponding to the dialogue and the comments.
  • The list of Latin names of all the animal and plant species mentioned in the script.
