The German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) is offering a limited number of 3-month full-time internships for highly motivated students in Berlin, Germany for 2020. The institute is particularly interested in hiring young academics in political science and related social sciences (economics, law, administration, occasionally also regional studies, ethnology, or journalism).

Students at the following stages are accepted:

  1. Students already studying for a
    master’s degree.
  2. Holders of
    bachelor’s degrees who can demonstrate they are applying for a place on a master’s degree course and who expect to be regular master’s students at the time proposed for the internship.
  3. Holders of bachelor’s/master’s degrees who are enrolled on an additional bachelor’s or master’s degree course.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting with all tasks within the research division, especially research projects, and producing documentation and background reports for research division members.
  2. Preparing reports of conferences and meetings.
  3. Literature research.
  4. Editing academic texts, researching and evaluating materials, helping to prepare meetings and conferences.
  5. General administrative tasks.

Qualifications:

  1. Very good knowledge of English (written and spoken).
  2. Good end-user IT skills (Word, Excel, web browsers).
  3. Your own ideas about what you wish to achieve during the internship.
  4. Interest in policy consultation and communication.
  5. Commitment, ambition, teamwork and social skills.

The research divisions also have their own specific requirements:

EU/Europe research division:

  1. Continuous participation in courses relevant to the research areas of the research division.
  2. Ideally, knowledge of an additional EU working language, or language skills relevant to the region.

International Security research division:

  1. Knowledge of current security issues.
  2. As well as students of politics, the cluster is especially interested in attracting students of economics, engineering and natural science who have interest in defense policy, arms economy and technology policy.

Americas research division:

  1. Course of study relating to the region.
  2. In-depth knowledge of the politics and/or economy of the United States and/or the Latin American states.

Eastern Europe and Eurasia research division:

  1. Good knowledge of at least one of the languages spoken in the region (for example Russian).
  2. Knowledge about Russia and/or other CIS states.

Middle East and Africa research division:

  1. Active interest in current political events in the region or a specific sub-region.
  2. Knowledge of Arabic or Farsi is advantageous for the Middle East, French for Africa.

Asia research division:

  1. Evidence of an active academic interest in one or more countries of the region.
  2. Knowledge of a relevant language is desirable, for example Chinese, Japanese or Hindi.

Global Issues research division:

  1. As well as students of politics, the research division is especially interested in attracting students of economics, international law and/or international relations.
  2. Interest in interdisciplinary discourse and prior knowledge in one of the following fields:
  • International energy, environmental and climate politics
  • Non-state actors
  • Migration and demographics
  • International financial markets
  • Trade politics
  • International law, United Nations

Benefits:

Interns at SWP receive €300 per month. Exceptions are only possible where the internship is already funded by another public or private organization.

Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP) advises political decision-makers on international politics and foreign and security policy. Its services are orientated primarily towards the German government and Bundestag, as well as relevant international organisations such as the European Union, NATO and the United Nations.
