Zurich Graduate School of Economics
The international Doctoral Program in Economics at the University of Zurich was launched in its current format in 2009. It offers both a set of courses taught (in English) by internationally renowned scholars at the University of Zurich and world-class research opportunities. The Department of Economics is looking for strong candidates holding a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree to fill their
Doctoral Positions 2015.
The Zurich Graduate School of Economics (ZurichGSE) typically receives about 400 applications and admits between 12 and 15 students each year. The vast majority receive funding for 4 to 5 years. Departmental scholarships are offered for the first year of the Ph.D. program, and recipients are expected to serve as teaching assistants from the second year onwards. In addition, the ZurichGSE offers four full UBS Center Scholarships. All scholarships are awarded competitively on the basis of academic merit.
The application deadline is January 31th, 2015. Courses start in September 2015. For more details about the ZurichGSE and funding options, please visit our website: www.econ.uzh.ch/dpe
We are looking forward to welcoming you as a doctoral student in our program!
First Year: During their first year of doctoral studies, students take core courses in Mathematics, Econometrics, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. These core courses provide the foundation for the topic or specialization courses taken during the second year, which are held by UZH faculty and by distinguished international scholars. Further, students have the opportunity to present the results of their own research in several specialized seminar series. Finally, there are many weekly research seminars with guest speakers.
Second Year: While the first year of the program will typically be devoted to the core courses, students in their second year will have the opportunity to work on their dissertation projects along with attending the second year program. A Research Proposal is also part of the program and has to be done within 6 semesters.
Third Year and Beyond: Thesis and Defense. The doctoral thesis can either be a monograph or an accumulation of published research papers. All professors of the Department of Economics can function as a supervisor. The report with a grade for the doctoral thesis will be written by your supervisor and co-supervisor.
Fast Track: The fast-track program is aimed at students who hold an excellent Bachelor’s degree and who are interested in pursuing an academic career. In addition to a dissertation, the structured fast-track PhD program requires successful participation in courses at both Master’s and doctoral level. A Master’s degree is acquired first, followed by a PhD.
