Inocrowd is launching the alternative sustainable pretreatment for metals challenge. The main issue of this competition is to identify a possible chemical solution or process for alternative pretreatments for metal surfaces for steel, galvanized steel and aluminium prior to coatings.

Challenge Details:

  • Current pretreatment technologies that are used after cleaning stages such as iron- or zinc phosphating or comparable inorganic thin film solutions (zirconium or silane based), use inorganic solutions containing heavy metals (e. g. nickel) and hydrogen fluoride (HF). The ingredients of these types are becoming more and more critical in the future regarding recycling and environmental sustainability. 

  • The purpose of this challenge is to identify possible alternatives for metal pretreatment technologies that are providing new ways for protecting metal workpieces (ferrous and non-ferrous) against a diversity of corrosion mechanisms and provide an excellent primer surface for painting. 

  • Thereby not only chemical solutions are interesting, but moreover also new processes and methods that can be applied in an industrial environment.

  • The new technology is intended to serve the following industries: general industry, coil, white goods, heavy equipment, automotive and automotive components. 

Expected Solution:

  • The main expectations are:

    • Eco-friendly- lower risk for safety, health and environment, e.g. waste water, energy and CO2 footprint reduction.

    • Long term corrosion protection in combination with top coatings.

    • Perfect adhesion to the substrate surface.

    • Productivity similar or superior to the current process.

  • The solver has to provide at least a theoretical solution that allows to build with the seeker a technical prototype for further testing. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • The solutions are not allowed to induce a colour change for the following paints and top coatings.
  • No intense smell in the dry state.
  • The solution does not rely on raw materials and processes that are excessively expensive or require very expensive specialized infrastructures.
  • All solutions that contain toxic substances or high amounts of volatile organic components are not considered.
  • The solution must provide a reasonable adhesion for the top coatings (powder and wet paints and electrophoretic coatings). All solutions that induce a nonstick surface (e. g. silicones) are excluded.

A prize of €15,000 will be given to the winner.
