The World Health Organization (WHO) is offering a job opportunity as a Scientist specialized in Environment, Climate Change and Health to join the team in Geneva, Switzerland for 2020. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Propose the scope and content of WHO's work on generating policy relevant evidence on addressing climate change and health.
  2. Monitor and guide research agendas. This action will include the formulation of mechanisms to support exchange between researchers and decision-makers, definition of regional and national research agendas on climate change and health. 
  3. Lead, or contribute to, international assessments of the risks to health from climate change and of the benefits to health of mitigation policies, in collaboration with other partners, such as the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
  4. Develop and support the use of tools for Member States to assess the effectiveness of interventions to increase resilience to climate change, and the health impacts of adaptation and mitigation decisions in other sectors. These evaluations should include assessment of economic consequences and wider sustainable-development implications, including the cost-effectiveness of interventions; the costs of inaction; and health benefits from mitigation and adaptation policies.

Main expected achievements include:

  1. Strategy and action plan to guide WHO's role in monitoring and guiding the international research agenda on climate change and health, developed and implemented in consultation with relevant staff in HQ, regional and country offices.
  2. Technical guidance and tools developed for assessment of the effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of policies, strategies and measures to protect health from climate change.
  3. Participation in international initiatives on research, evidence, and economic assessment, to ensure appropriate representation of health and climate linkages and opportunities developed to increase support for health and climate research.

Required qualifications:

Education:

  • Essential: Advanced university degree in international development, public health, or economics, or university degree in a different field including an advanced degree (minimum master level) in international development, public health or economics.
  • Desirable: Studies or training in health policy, and/or research methods on climate change and health.

Experience:

  • Essential: At least 7 years professional experience of conducting or managing research on environmental and social determinants of health in relation to developing countries, of which at least 4 years working on climate change and health at the international level. Proven experience working in international development, epidemiological or economic analysis, in particular, with respect to climate change and health.
  • Desirable: Experience in developing technical guidance and tools for assessing effectiveness of health interventions. Experience working at, or in collaboration with, other UN Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, and national Ministries, including in developing countries.

Skills:

  1. Substantial knowledge of the relationships between climate change and health, international development, epidemiological or economic analysis and significant knowledge of WHO's role in supporting Member States to respond to climate change. 
  2. Excellent interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills. 
  3. Ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships with other partners, within and outside WHO.
  4. Ability to plan, develop and implement project and programme activities.

Language Skills:

  • Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
  • Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of French. Intermediate knowledge of one of the other official languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).

Benefits:

The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 73,516 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5005 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
