Applications for full-time enrolment in the PhD programme in Economics are invited for entry in September 2015. We accept applications for any field of economics but we would particularly welcome applications in the area of migration, health economics, experimental economics, econometric theory, financial econometrics, labour economics and microeconomics.
Successful applicants are expected to have a Master's degree from a good programme in economics or a related subject, and a strong analytical and quantitative background.
As one of the top economics departments in the UK, we are highly respected and recognised internationally in many fields. Our interests span a very wide range of applied and policy oriented fields (Labour Economics, Health Economics, Development Economics, Behavioural Economics, Finance and Investments) as well as more theoretical domains (Macroeconomic Theory, Econometrics, Game Theory).
We offer an active and stimulating research environment in which our postgraduate research students play a crucial part. As a PhD student in Southampton you will be taught and supervised by academics who are internationally renowned experts in their fields. Students entering the PhD programme benefit from advanced economics training in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Applied Econometrics in the first year. In addition to the above core modules the Economics Department is also running different complementary field modules, including Economics of Network and Economics of Migration. The field modules are taught by internationally renowned experts visiting the Economics division on a regular basis. They are typically taught over a two week period and last between 10 and 15 hours.
