The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) invites scholars with Ph.D. degrees from Djibouti, Mauritania, or Sudan to participate in the Research Development Fellowship Program. The goal of the Research Development Fellowship Programme is to transform the opportunities of talented health researchers based in Africa, enabling them to contribute to reducing the burden of disease through leading research that is responsive to its African settings. The Fellowships are designed to enable awardees to develop their own research ideas and research capabilities, to grow their research relationships through collaboration and mentorship, and to work towards a major funding proposal. The Fellowship does NOT aim to provide funds for a whole research project: this is not a project grant. The Fellowship aims to develop the skills you will need as a researcher, such as collaboration, network building, writing, and leadership.

Applicant Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Djibouti, Mauritania, or Sudan.
  • You need not be resident in Africa at the time of applying, provided that your application is officially supported by an African institution that meets the eligibility criteria for an employing institution and which attests that it intends to employ you locally.
  • You must be working at least 20% (Full-Time Equivalent) FTE in an active research role.
  • EITHER (a) have a guarantee of employment with a legally established research organization or a University in Sub-Saharan Africa for the duration of your Fellowship;
  • OR (b) have a guarantee of employment at a center of research excellence outside Africa and an honorary contract with a legally established research organization or University in SubSaharan Africa for the duration of your Fellowship, with at least 70% of your time-based in Africa; AND
  • have a declaration from the Sponsor representing your Employing Organisation detailing how they will support your development as a researcher if you receive an award.
  • The applicant must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree from a recognized higher education institution after May 2014.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Previous awardees (Fellows) of AREF Research Development Fellowships and AREF-EDCTP Preparatory Fellowships are not eligible for the current Programme.

Host Organization Eligibility:

  • Be in Africa, the United Kingdom, or continental Europe.
  • Be an academic institution or a research-oriented industry or a policy-making organization.
  • Be a legal entity constituted under the national law of the country it is based;
  • Be engaged in world-class research and/or its translation into products, policies or practices to the benefit of the public;
  • Be in receipt of substantial, international, competitive research funding;
  • Have the financial capacity to support the program as set out in the proposal;
  • Possess the capacity to support and implement the proposed program of activities;
  • Be able to accept the terms and conditions of the Fellowship.

Employing Organization Eligibility:

  • Be a ‘not-for-profit’ research organization operating in Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • Be a legal entity constituted under the national law of the country it is based.
  • An authorized officer must sign the signature sheet to attest to the institution's ability to receive and manage funds awarded.

Funding:

The maximum funding that an applicant may seek for a Fellowship that includes a 9-month placement will be £40,000

The funding may include contributions to the following:

  • Preparation, e.g. of samples and data, at your Home Institution for the Placement Visas, medical insurance and other costs associated with the placement;
  • Accommodation and subsistence in the host country for your Placement Period;
  • One return journey (airfare: standard economy and routes).
  • Reasonable Fellowship-related travel within the host country;
  • Reasonable research training consumables and services costs incurred at the Host Organisation;
  • Participation at one specific international research conference;
  • Follow-up Period costs at the Employing Organisation, which can include (i) a contribution of up to 50% of the Fellow’s salary (not including allowances and benefits such as housing, furnishing, transport, schooling) for the Follow-up Period of the Fellowship; and (ii) reasonable research development costs directly following on from the Placement and targeted to achieve the desired longer-term outcomes of AREF Fellowships.

Fellowship Components:

  • Preparatory Period of up to 8 weeks.
  • A Placement of 3 to 9 months for research training and professional development at one international center of excellence in global health research in Europe or Africa.
  • Follow-up Period immediately after the Placement of up to a total of 12 weeks.
  • Mentorship support for you and your mentors in Africa.
  • Access to a Grant Writing Workshop organized for Fellows by AREF part way through your Fellowship.
  • Seed Funds awarded through the competition to about three Fellows each year. If you win this extra award, you will use the funding at your home institution to generate pilot/preparatory data essential to go on to compete for significant new grants. AREF organizes this competition part way through your placement.
  • The maximum period for the whole Fellowship (excluding seed fund) is up to 58 weeks. This should include a maximum of 18 weeks total for the Preparatory and Follow-up Periods combined and a maximum of 9 months (40 weeks) for a Placement. The duration of each Period must be justified by the training you propose
